Intel Worker 1: You know what will be a good idea? Getting rid of the pins and make the motherboard companies deal with it.
Intel Worker 2: What if the customer bends a pin then?
Intel Worker 1: Don't care, not our problem.
Intel Worker 2: BRILLIANT!

Which is better?

The one that is compatible with your motherboard cpu socket.

I beg to differ!!, PGA Cpu's are Fixable, I was given a brand new AMD 3200+ for free at release, it was a $460 chip at the time, problem was it had 2 broken pins, now the thing is when a pin breaks off, it still has a little bump on there so i took a blown Celeron chip and a scalpel, cut off two pins as close as possible to the chip so it still has that flat surface on the one end so it looks like a pushpin. inserted it into the two pinholes on the board corresponding to the broken pins and it worked, the heatsink force kept it in contact and that thing worked for years. Good times..

LGA vs PGA! Which is better?
Linus will break both

A broken PGA pin can be replaced, and you won't even need a jeweler. It can be done by placing a small copper wire in the socket hole opposite to the broken pin. The hardest part is cutting the wire to a length that will make good contact to the CPU while allowing it to sit flat in the socket. This saved a couple dead AMD Athlon CPUs I found on ebay back in the day.

I remember dropping my FX-8350 onto my desk and it fell onto my carpeted floor. I thought it was done-zo but still took hours using a credit card to re-align half of the pins perfectly and sure enough - it worked perfectly! Bewildering, but I eventually sold that CPU on eBay for $100 before upgrading to an i7-7700k. Been a fan of PGA since then since it's easier to even attempt to repair. The LGA motherboard pins spook me out.

I broke a couple of pins once on AMD CPU put a small 2mm copper wire piece inserted in the right hole then reinstalled CPU and it worked

broken pins on the cpu is what happens when you use mayonnaise as your thermal paste of choice, like what your typical OEM will do

Easy fix to keep the cpu coming out with the heatsink.

Before lifting the HEATSINK. Twist the heatsink as much as you can then remove the heatsink.

I've been doing that for a while and its been working great for me so far.

I wonder why AMD doesn't have some sort of socket clip to go over the edge of the CPU that would prevent it from coming out with the cooler.

very informative video.
i also like the BGA information.
straight to the point like tech videos should be.

I'll take PGA thanks.
PGA bent pin = Use a mechanical pencil to bend it back
LGA bent pin = Buy a new motherboard (In general)

i accidentally drop a thermal paste into proc socket (an old asrock z77 extreme4) and bend some of the pin in attempt to clean in. So i go to so small shop that specialist in repairing motherboard to try to repair it. it think this gonna take a day or two but all he do is look at it then some kind of eye scope (the kind that watchmaker use) and repair under 5 minutes.my motherboard worked and still going strong until now.
best dollar i ever spend.

Thank you for the tip on the cooler removal for PGA! My first ever motherboard (LGA) had a bent pin. A friend of mine has steady hands and was able to touch it back into place after 40 minutes of poking. I trust CPU makers to make reliable pins more than I trust motherboard makers to make extra sensitive pins.

PGA is less nerve racking when installing a CPU than LGA. the first time I installed an LGA CPU I though the crunching sound wasn't supposed to happen.

To remove a cooler from a PGA socket, you can always firstly try to gently turn it, so that the force only goes to the paste, instead of the pin-locker.. (The socket will never allow the CPU to turn at any case). This way you make sure the paste gives up before pulling the cooler upwards. Using this method the CPU will stay inside its socket when you get the cooler..

just twist the cooler while removing it. CPU won't be stuck to it ever again.

if you don't pull the cooler straight off then you wouldn't have the issue of the processor coming out. just slightly twist to break the thermal seal
