David Bowie was not ahead of his time. He was exactly where he was supposed to be when he was supposed to be and my generation was beyond blessed to have had him in our lives. He was a composer, a singer, an artist, an actor (Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Labyrinth), a model, an activist, and an absolute Gentleman who, at one of his concerts, made a lowly gate ticket-taker feel like she was doing the most important job on the planet. The day he died this ticket-taker lost a piece of her soul. So happy another generation has found him.

Bowie reinvented himself every so often. Complete change in appearance and music.

Not to take anything away from this classic, but 10 years ago Commander Chris Hadfield - a Canadian astronaut who was captaining the ISS (International Space Station) did an iconic remake of Space Oddity live from the ISS, floating weightless with his guitar. In Hadfield's words: "I had to get Bowie’s permission and he said it was the most poignant version ever. Millions of people have seen my version and it put laughter and joy in the face of David Bowie in the last couple years of his life. So that changed my life."

Mr Bowie, my musical hero for 50 years. Way ahead of his time on many occasions. Miss his brilliance.

This really should be listened to with headphones as you are missing some amazing panning between left and right, and some splitting of tracks similarly.

The album was released July 1969.
"The song was even used in a BBC news report related to the space mission, but due to the bleak nature of the lyrics, “Space Oddity” was banned in the US lest it put a damper on Apollo 11's mission to the moon."

David Bowie was a genius, he reinvented himself several times. He has somewhere around 400 songs spanning 6 decades. He influence everyone. Please do more! My personal favorite from this era is Starman.

The title was a play on words of the Stanley Kubrick film '2001: A Space Odyssey"

In 1983, in an interview on MTV, David Bowie called out the network for not playing the music of Black artists. This was the height of popularity for Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie and many others.

Fun fact: David Bowie is an inductee of both the rock & roll hall of fame and the Science Fiction and Fantasy hall of fame! Man was versatile and talented, and is deeply missed by all who loved him. I wish I had seen him live. My personal favourite by Bowie is his cover of Brel’s Amsterdam, but my favourite of the ones he wrote himself is Life on Mars. The “sequel” to Space Oddity is Ashes to Ashes.
