In this exclusive God Of War Ragnarök gameplay video, Associate Editor Jason Guisao shares a first look at the new combat abilities Kratos and Atreus can use, including upgrades to the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos.

Lead combat designers Mihir Sheth and Denny Yeh have over 17 years of God of War experience shared between them, and both played prominent roles in the previous game’s success. The series’ current direction is inspired by an old studio motto: Playing with your food.

The combat definitely looks more faster and aggressive than the 2018 and new enemy types coming soon of course with some of the old enemies returning it really has the potential to become a banger

The combat looks more aggressive and agile, i love it... the old game sometimes felt very slow and clunky, but the grapple mechanic in Ragnarok really seems to fix that problem

I’m hoping there’s more finishing moves for enemies that’s different depending on whether you finish them off unarmed, with axe, or with blades. It’d be cool to see, say, Kratos just break a Draugr in half with his hands and knee, or watch him cleave a Deaugr in two with his axe, or see him pull a Draugr toward him with the blades to then decapitate it, to give some examples. The previous game’s finishing moves felt too long and boring with how little of them there were and how Kratos would just usually rip them in half and expose their grilled cheese insides or crush their heads to the sound of exploding ice heads.

new attacks seen in the gameplay:
0:04 axe jumping slam
0:09 knocking frozen enemies off ledges causes an ice explosion
0:11 axe return jumping slam
0:22 shield [stonewall variant] ground slam
0:25 atreus new arrow type
0:28 axe ice wave (similar to one of the runic attacks from 2018)
0:30 axe charge into knockback ice swing (likely the new signature move ability to triangle)
0:33 shield [dauntless variant] perfect parry into knockback strike
0:37 blades spin into fire wave (signature move? looks like it will replace the aimed charged R2 from 2018)
0:41 blades execution (animations now seemingly vary based on held weapon instead of just being fists like the OG games)
0:45 blades grappling hook
1:19 blades grab into shoulder check (similar to one of the runic attacks from 2018, different from the regular blades grab because kratos is sent towards the enemy instead of the the enemy being launched towards kratos)
1:24 blades jumping slam

There's a very healthy amount of new moves, especially considering that this is not all of them and no runic attacks are actually performed. I also like the trend of downsizing certain runic attacks and turning them into regular moves.

I miss the old camera angle style. They should have added the ability to change camera to a classic mode.

Jumps have improved. Also combat is much more engaging than before and also graphics are fantastic. Awaiting for the full release on Nov❤️🔥

I think Mijonir will have the same mechanic as the Blade of Olympus.
You have to charge it through battle, and you can only use it for a short amount of time.

I can already see two things. Creature design is amazing and animation of npc and characters are in league of their own. This looks absolutely incredible!!!
And one more thing, whatever the cost Sony pays Raf Grassetti, it is worth every penny! He is one the best if not the best video game animator in the industry!
