Didn't know how to price anything until I learned about square inch pricing. Makes it a lot easier regardless of size or amount.

Another consideration for artists is the overall industry. In other words, if prices are too low then that brings down the value of what all other artists are creating. I saw a fellow selling extremely nice original pencil renderings on ebay for $5.00 each and I know he spent several hours on each one. Why would anyone buy one of mine for $150-$200 if they could buy his for $5.00? I did call him out on it.

Thanks for the new video. I'm always shocked that you guys don't have a larger following. Happy New Year!

Just stumbled upon your vids - awesomesauce! I've got a few paintings out there and am just starting out. I've been painting for years -but only started seriously this past 1 1/2 yrs. I have some people interested in my pieces. I will let you know if I close the deal. I'm hoping. I am probably undercharging - in addition to giving a discount -but if I get 3 pieces sold instead of 1 - then that will certainly have paid off. :) You guys ROCK! Thank you for being you & staying true to your vision and putting out such great content. I will subscribe. I'm following you on FB....keep up the great work & congrats on the book!

I think the questioner was using linear inches to price their work. 11"+14"=25". $175/25"= $7 per inch. 36"+48"=84". Therefore 84" x $7 = $588. Some artists prefer this method because when working with a larger range of sizes, it doesn't inflate the price of the larger works so much in comparison to the smaller ones. Another strategy is to start with the larger sizes, find a pricing structure that works for those, then figure out pricing for smaller and smaller pieces until you reach a threshold where you don't feel comfortable pricing lower. I know this is an older video, but this is still a very relevant topic and I hope this helps.

Thank you! How do you reconcile the realistic need for income, with the newbie "no one wants to buy the art even for $40, let alone $100 for 24 hrs work" phenom? Do you just keep putting out more art at the price that covers supplies and time, and figure that eventually all the marketing will work? Love your channel! I learn so much!

Happy New Years guys!! So.. I have put myself in the similar boat as Tamera. I am working on a commission piece that first of all is not the type of stuff I usually work on. This makes me NOT excited to work on it. And I didn't realize exactly how much detail and work would actually go into this piece so now I'm feeling like I under charged. Ugh. But as long as we are learning from our experiences I think eventually we will start feeling more confident and happy about our prices.

Hello and thank you. I am adding a quote of the day because it feels appropriate. I would also like to add if someone is commissioning a work it is a great time to chat, tell them about yourself and the processes. Then lay out the price. Explain material costs, and time invested.
By the way Rafi, I always hated the price per inch method of sales. Your other video was so much better where it is not just the materials, but the day rate which includes studio space. The price per inch is what I was told to use in art school. I do not know anyone who would purchase a painting based on inches, or centimeters. The material cost, and day rate sells a lot more paintings.
Thank you as always for the awesome work.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.

I find pricing my art very difficult. Does it matter what kind of art you create? As I do several different kinds of art. Example being sketching vs painting (landscapes) vs micropainting on small items, acyrlic pour paintings. It's all a bit overwhelming.

Pricing is something i have problem with all the time. I mean i am starting artist and i am living in country where we have everything much cheaper than other countries. People here are not willing to pay too much for art and i never know if my prices are too high or too low. And these tutorials on youtube will not help me cuz they usually work just for USA and more expensive countries. And also cuz i am starting artist, there is not that many customers so... i just dont know what price should i give :D

Can I ask what makes you think your work and Jeff Koons work different? What makes one artist work worth more than another persons work?

Also Can I ask your opinion on selling art prints? I want to have other people be able to collect my work, but I feel that if there was too many pieces in circulation, than that would just devalue my work because each piece isn’t necessarily expensive if someone can own basically the same piece but for a cheaper price.

I did try to sell 1 of my painting at $1.25 per sq.inch. I did 16"x20" oil on canvas. Well it be enough as starter? I saw some art works at facebook marketplace and it's too way so cheap. Damn! But as of now i just did trying to sell it at facebook marketplace. I need your advice sir rafi. :(
