First heard this song in the late 1950s, sung by Chris Connor. It was written, apparently, by Billy Strayhorn when he was a 16-year old sada jerk in Pittsburgh PA, later to become part of the Duke Ellington Band. "...a week in Paris will ease the bite of it" has always been my motto!

I got into this song so much last autumn, as I do with all jazz music this time of year and I’m so excited to listen to this every day this season. Her voice is like sweet sugar and butter in this one. She sounds absolutely flawless and the sparse arrangement is so cozy.

I used to visit all the very gay places
Those come what may places
Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life
To get the feel of life
From jazz and cocktails
The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces
With distingué traces
That used to be there you could see where
They'd been washed away
By too many through the day
Twelve o'clocktails

WERBUNG

Then you came along with your siren's song
To tempt me to madness
I thought for a while that your pointed smile
Was tinged with the sadness
Of a great love for me
Ah, yes, I was wrong
Again I was wrong

Life is lonely again
And only last year
Everything seemed so assured
Now life is awful again
And the thoughtful of heart
Could only be a bore

A week in Paris will ease the bite of it
All I care is to smile in spite of it
I'll forget you I will
And yet you are still
Burning inside my brain

Romance is mush
Stifling those who strive
I'll live a lush
Life in some small dive
And there I'll be
While I rot with the rest
Of those whose lives are lonely too

Can you mention Ella Fitzgerald and Lady Gaga in the same sentence? I'm no music critic, but I think you can. I loved this song for decades but hadn't paid any attention to Lady Gaga until I found this. I had no idea that she is such a formidable talent. This song has been covered countless times, and no doubt this and Ella's are at the top of the heap. And as for a comparison between Lady Gaga and Madonna...Perhaps Lady Gaga was influenced and inspired by Madonna's flash, but when it comes to pure singing, Madonna couldn't carry Lady Gaga's lunch.

Oh my God, such an amazing performance. Gaga’s voice is wonderful as always. There’s no another incredible artist like Gaga. She’s the one and only Queen of Pop.

Gaga's fault is an raw Streisand complex that feels like a dull saw on petrified wood.

this is a good effort but Natalie Coles version just about nails it

I don’t care for this version. Gaga’s vocals are ok, I’m just NOT feeling this version of this song. Sorry....NOT SORRY.
