Their has never been a movie that has influenced my life more than this film..I remember watching this in theatres when I was 15 and the first thing after seeing the movie was grabbing a camera that used to be my brothers... now being 22 and about to finish my post-grad in art (Photography) and the previous year being one of 3 students to be nominated for the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography student photographer of the year..I can't thank this movie enough for how it's shaped my life.

Update (2024): Wow I forgot about this comment I posted..Thank you for all the kind messages..still going strong going into 2024!

The most underrated and underappreciated movie ever made

When I saw that movie for the first time more than 6 years ago, I took the decision of leaving my job and study another language and travel outside my country. Since, I've been in more than 20 countries and I am learning my fourth language. Best decision ever!

This movie is a perfect representation of an introvert's life. Always wanting to break free, but paralyzed by our daydreams. We spend our life in constant daydreams, never really having the courage to break out of that internal monologue and live our lives.

Also, that quote by Sean Penn about staying in a moment and not letting photographs ruin the moment is exactly how I feel whenever I experience those moments. You just wanna stay in it and bask in it, soak it all in and not ruin it by wasting time pulling out the camera and stopping for a pose. You save it in your mind, and there, whether it degrades through time and old age, you'll cherish it. Whether it's crystal clear or foggy from poor remembrance - you'll always cherish the feeling of those memories, no matter how poor they become.

It’s a beautiful movie, and yes, it is
severely underrated, but that’s probably because “beautiful things don’t ask for attention”🙃

This film is the perfect example of the quote *"Beautiful things don't ask for attention"*

From someone who turned 20 this year. With everything that's going on with the world. I'm most scared of just existing. Instead of actually living. Because I've always wanted to travel around Europe. All the best and stay safe :).

As a photographer, the scene with the mountain lion cat made the most difference in my life. I learnt that sometimes the camera can get in the way of a beautiful moment and so remove it. Sometimes you just need to live in the moment

It’s a shame more movies with this much soul aren’t being made…
And the critics dare to call it a “comedy”

When I watched this movie for the first time, me and my friend mocked the guy who suggested this to us. He just smiled politely and went. Years later I watched the movie again and I called the same guy and asked him why didn't you get angry on us when we mocked this amazing film . He again smiled and said I know you guys should reach that point in your life to enjoy and understand what this film truly means. And he's absolutely true, when I'm older and torn apart by life, this movie was a like a breath of fresh air. Thank you Ben Stiller and thank you my friend...

I was an archaeology student who was aspired to preserve historic buildings. Back in financial crisis, I found no place to accept me as a PhD student and start working in a marketing job in a big companies in Korea.
On my way back from trip, I saw this movie and realized that I want to pursue my dream. I never looked back since. 8 years later from that mom ent, I work as a conservator for historic buildings in NYC. I owe everything to Walter Mitty.

Travelling is awesome.
But the most important lesson here is to be honest with yourself. Do not fall into the trap of society saying you are wonderful as you are and you fit into a certain category. You're not and you don't.

You are not obliged to be the person you were 5 minutes ago. You can redefine yourself and go after what it is you truly want, but it takes commitment and decisive action. Failure is as much a part of life as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west, you have to put your ego aside and learn from these mistakes. Make yourself a better person by DOING things. Don't worry, nothing bad can happen to you. Just imagine everything will be all right and the worst thing that can happen is that people laugh at you, reject you or perhaps even insult you. But none of that matters.

You are a good person and you are worth love, happiness, fulfillment, excitement, adventure, ...
You have to be able to go after and take what it is you truly want in life, on this planet where life is fleeting and uncertain. Don't do it for other people but do it for yourselves.
