The Episcopalians today are a different sort than John Steinbeck was. My bias is with Catholicism because even with all that's wrong with its believers, past and present, we include self-criticism and criticism of our clergy in our tradition. No church will match your own values, Andrew, so I suggest attending one that offers what you need and a communion of fellow believers with whom to grow spiritually. I go to Mass to receive Christ, ignore the homily, and interact with my parish. I know whatever church you choose will fail you, as mine does, but then that's human! God bless you!

Fellow Episcopalian here. Love the church, love the Book of Common Prayer/liturgy; and I too am disgusted by the leadership. They're 100% out of touch with the vast majority of the congregations. I would liken it to the FBI leadership vs rank and file agents.
