We rescued our retired racing greyhound, he has been an absolute wonder, amazing dog! Little to no barking, so chill and easy going. Not reactive at all, I'm always so proud of my boy when I see other dogs barking up a storm and my grey walks by without a glance in their direction. I literally walk him with my pinky finger. And the head hug nudges make my day. Only downfall is any sort of training has been tough

A few days ago I had to put down my American Eskimo Gaia. I had her from 8 weeks old and she died one week shy of her 11th birthday. I was a first time dog owner in 2011 when I got her. The breed was actually a compromise with my ex wife. She wanted a Bichon Frees, and I wanted an Alaskan Malamute. We found Eskimo dogs in the local classifieds and decided to go take a look. When we got there we met the dad who had such a great personality in a dog. He was active and playing with the kids at the house, listened well, and was a people pleaser. We decided to go ahead and purchase a puppy. When asked which one, my buddy stepped in and said we should let the kids choose that they’ll know which is best. It happened to be my girl Gaia. She took to me like no canine has ever before. Loyal to no end, listened to every command, loved me with all her heart. She could do an assortment of tricks, she rode on my paddleboard with me, kayak, went canoe camping, and hiked high peaks. That little girl was my world, and if I could recommend a great breed it would be an American Eskimo Dog all the way. So much personality, and so smart. I do hope I find that kind of deep connection again, but it truly could’ve been a once in a lifetime thing. RIP Baby Gaia 5-6-11/ 4-29-22

Those small breeds are definitely good for first time dog owners but they do need training or they become the boss at home !

WHat ppl need to get about the smaller breeds is that their dispsosition and size are no excuse to forego discipline training. So many first-time, small dog owners never bother to properly train and socialize their dogs and they become agressive and can't look at another dog or person without going ballistic.

Also, pugs are very unhealthy. They can't breathe properly, they have a ton of joint issues and their spine is a mess because of the unnaturally curled tail. If you really really want one just adopt a mutt that kinda looks like a pug from a shelter and refrain from buying one.

Don't promote pug breeding that's cruel for their genetic breathing problems

Dogs can be loyal, loving, playful, and, let's face it, they're pretty cute only when you care the dogs with love and effection

Note: you DO need to brush your Golden regularly to keep them free of tangles. But cutting their coat isn’t needed and they only need to go to the groomer once in awhile for proper ear trimming and paw maintenance (take them more often if you prefer to leave the nail clipping to a professional).

This video made me like poodles more than I used to but Golden Retrievers are still my *MOST* favorite dog

I LOVE my (standard) poodles. Have had them in our family (starting with my parents) since 1959! But not sure about them for a first time dog owner. You are so right about HOW smart they are. The ONLY issue with them, is with a novice owner they might be training the owner to their taste rather than the other way around (as it should be). LOL

Mr. Narrator, it is not pronounced pap•pill•lee•on, it's pappy•yon. It means "butterfly" in French. The sister dog with non-erect ears is called Le Phalène, "The Moth". Le Papillon is named such because the fluttery hair on the erect ears reminds one of a butterfly.

I knew Beagles wouldn't be on the list. I bought a Beagle for my first dog. The hardest girl to train, but when it finally happened it was like I got the best dog on the planet. But she was even great when she got into trouble.
