EA Sports WRC Review │ This Is The Truth - Deal With It ☕

I review EA Sports WRC and let you know if it's worth getting and what's good and what's bad about this title. If you are fed up with the flood of anodyne, non-critical tripe surrounding this game, then you will probably enjoy this video that I tailor-made for intellectually high-class tea drinkers and people able to look at video games in a somewhat critical manor.

I've been off road racing for over a decade now. I started when I was 12. We don't do rally but it's very similar in a lot of ways. We race around closed off roads through the forests and some street circuits. My current weapon of choice is a Subaru BRZ rwd but I think calling it a Subaru at this point is a stretch lmao. Before then I raced an awd dodge challenger that I unfortunately wrapped around a tree mid race.

I only bring all that up because I feel like folks in the racing community like to know your experience before giving your opinions.

With that being said the first thing I noticed about this game is how authentic the handling feels. It feels like the tires actually bite into the gravel and I'm not sliding around on ice. In real life you have significantly more grip than you think and sliding through corners is an advanced technique that takes years of practice. That snapping forward thing you're talking about is a real life thing. Cars aren't meant to slide. The aero dynamics of the car want to make it go straight. If you counter steer too hard in a slide you'll snap forward. Especially in gravel and pavement. The opposite of that is if you over steer you'll loose the rear end. You need to find the sweet spot to hold the slide and counter steer when you want to straighten out. The reason this feels weird to you is because dr1 and 2 feel like the tires do absolutely nothing and slide over the gravel like it's ice. In this game I use genuine racing techniques. In dirt rally I can just throw the car around like it means nothing.

Also the handbrake in this game feels very realistic. Whenever you full on lock your wheels your car instantly becomes un predictable. You should avoid using it at all times. Relying on it is a sign of an amateur driver. Hand brake turning is also slowing 9 times outta 10 than flowing through the corner. Drifting is for showing off, sliding is for racing.

Other than the performance of the game being shit at launch, I'd say everything else you bring up is matter of opinion. But thats just the nature of a game review.

If you wanna play a fun video game then go for dirt rally games. If you want to play an authentic off road game then play this....or beam ng 😁

The best thing to come out of this game is that I’m playing Dirt Rally 2 again and loving it

Aside from the performance and stuttering, the biggest problem for me is there is just too much tyre grip. In hairpins and tight turns the gravel feels like slightly slippy tarmac. You can break the rear end grip but it very aggressively regains grip again, there isn’t enough progression in the loss and re-acquisition of grip.

Great video. Are we really going to sit here and pretend this has a anything on WRC Generations? Generations is dog walking this game. All the bullying from 2.0 fans all of this time. That smug, “ you’ll see how it’s really done” attitude all of this time, for this?

Thank you. After 4 hours on a really high end system, I wondered why do many reviews portray a different (I.e. glowing) experience. Sound aside, and ignoring issues like stuttering that will get fixed, the design is dismal. I second all your observations. I would add that they picked “dusty tan” as the color of all road surfaces - tarmac or dirt or gravel, new or old road. In addition the environment feels like a 3D computer graphics model mated with a water color painting from the 1800’s. We have the haze that prevails everywhere and under almost all weather conditions and time of day. It took a while for the kinks to get worked out of WRCG, but other than for multi-player and sound, WRCG is far more immersive, fun, exciting, and detailed.

I agree, A disappointment and downgrade from Dirt Rally 2 in every way. They should have stuck with the ego engine and focused all their time and effort on improving physics and FFB. The ego engine looked and sounded beautiful and ran like a dream on a mid-range pc. All anyone wanted was an improved Dirt 2.0 with some new locations. What we got was a wet fart.

The honesty of Gamermuscle is why I always wait for his reviews. Feeling the same thing about the game.

I think one of the biggest shames is that the fantastic Kylotonn games and their brilliant stages have now just been forgotten and were ignored by so many of the racing playerbase at the time.

This review is bang on. I knew within 20 mins of messing around with the settings and trying to play. The problems ahead of me were not worth it and refunded. Not acceptable on release.

Totally agree with the snapness while drifting or handbraking. The surface of the stages are worse than DR 2.0 but better than WRC Generations, it should be like real surfaces according to John Amstrong. And I am also missing the random events, I wanna see DNF cars and all other stuff from DR 2.0. I'm having fun, but at the moment it needs a lot or patches. I believe the titel is launched sooner than it supposed to due license and contract with the WRC Promoter or something.

The first honest review I’ve seen of this game. Thank You!

The insta grip is very noticeable on 24:52 and 25:32. The funny part is that the old WRC's were always trashed because of poor performance and stuttering, yet, now we see some reviewers minimizing the same issues. The sad state of sim racing in 2023.

When creating custom rally and enabling track degradation the game transforms totally, to the better.
I believe ppl are judging the tracks when playing only time trials. In time trial the tracks are smooth, no degradation.

the roads are flat. there is no convex shape to them like real roads for drainage. i guess that would have made the game too hard for casual players as it may add to the 'magnetized to walls' effect.
there are also not enough bumps, not enough diversity to the surfaces, not enough on camber or off camber corners. not enough uphills and downhills.
it all just feels very... flat.

The best word that sums it up for me is “safe”. To a ridiculous degree. They were so focused on “not alienating potential customers” they forgot to make a good game. Imagine Burns had had that attitude! RBR would have been pointless trash, but with risk taking and NOT compromising, Warthog made a masterpiece. Yes, EA WRC is hyper safe and Corporate. Without a doubt.

This is the first review which doesn't seem to be sponsored by EA.
Despite being an RBR modder (creating stages), I understand arcade / simcade games have their place on the market, so I am not going to hate it for how simplified it is in many ways. But as one who have some idea about what's possible with the current hw & sw, I find ridiculous how such big companies with all that budget and years of development can produce such indie-like game, with basic flaws like non movable traffic signs...
The release was either super rushed, or they simply didn't care because they knew people will buy it anyway thanks to that ridiculous amount of sponsored reviews and the fact it's gonna be the only modern rally game for some time.

ive seen what feels like thousands of reviews. all mindlessly praising the game, ignoring the flaws you can even see clearly just watching gameplay let alone actually being the one playing it.
its good to see someone do an honest review that points out all the same things i have issues with.

I think we should stop buying unfinished games, i tryed 5 times to play this game but everything is just terrible, the Ffb, the stearing, physics, grafics, performance. Not even Nvidia has a driver support for this game. The smart thing to do is wait for fixes and try later.
I run this game on 4090 and 7950x3d and still very choppy experience.

I do agree the tracks look artificial. There is a huge difference between track and non track. And that they don't look like the location they are supposed to.
I am really disappointed by 1) the lack of innovation for the rallying. Yes, we get a car builder that seems awesome, but the races feel really dated. No random events, no unexpected failures, animals crossing (kenya is a waste for that!), super boring co pilot...
2) How can they mess up difficulty in a rally game so often??? WRC 10 was terrible, V-rally 4 the same, and this one the same :/

I don't always agree with you, GM, but this time we are in complete agreement. It looks worse, plays worse, and performs worse than DR2.0, and is quite frankly a disappointment.

Also what has been highlighted to me through other WRC reviews from the "simfluencer" populous, is that they appear to be more interested in keeping those pre-release keys flowing rather than actually doing their job and telling us the truth.
