2014 Mazda CX-5 radio stays on when trying to turn off car- FIXED replace KDY0-46-040

My 2014 CX-5 had a problem (for years now), when I tried to shut it off the radio (accessories) would stay on. If you leave the car like this and shut the door it will NOT eventually shut off... it will drain your battery! Most people work around this by starting and stopping the car again but putting it in park forcefully... some times it takes several tries. In about 4 minutes I show you how I replaced the switch in the console that detects when the car is in park(among other things)... the Mazda part number is KDY0-46-040 I ended up ordering it on eBay (Could not find it on Amazon) it cost me about $65 (Ordered it in June 2018). I have had several comments that the Right Hand Drivers(RHD) part number is KDY1-46-040. I asked my Mazda dealer how much it would cost to fix this and they said $300-$400. I hope this helps someone save some money. I am not a mechanic, so I may have done something that mechanics would do differently... but it worked for me YMMV :-)
I found this link from Mazda:

Thanks for this video. This was really helpful in getting the part replaced and the issue fixed!

Thanks mate, best instructional video for this annoying issue. FYI for anyone in Australia or with Right Hand Drive, the code for the part is KDY1-46-040. Using pliers are the trick to disconnecting the plug from the original switch. Good grip & pulls out. That had me stumped a bit..lol. worked a treat..thanks again.

This is a defect that Mazda refuses to take responsibility for. I have a 2013 cx5 grand touring. This is the only problem I’ve had with this car. You make it look simple. I know it’s not. I may try to tackle this issue. Not sure yet. Thanks for sharing this information. Subscribed

Been suffering from this issue for 2.5 YEARS on my 2014 CX-5 AWD touring. Solved it with $74 piece os spare part I found at my local mazda dealer. You saved me almost $200. Thank you. My car started doing it when at around 40, 000 mile mark.

Bill, your video was perfect for replacing the switch. 2 things I would add that I has trouble with. At 2:29, you have to make sure that clip (the one closest to the steering wheel) seats properly when putting it all back together. It did not seat correctly for me, and it caused the shifter sleeve cover to bind up when it was all back together. And make sure the CX-5 is in park when replacing the switch. I didn't, and it would not work correctly. Figured those 2 things out, and it's a perfect repair! Thanks for the excellent video!

Just did ours! Video instructions were spot on. One word of advice, make sure your key is INSIDE the car when you try to start it. 🤦‍♂️

This video saved me $450. Thank you so much! Clear, concise instructions were easy to follow. Done in about 30 mins. I can’t believe the dealership would try to charge people $660 to do this. An $80 part and $580 labor for a 30 minute job. Highway robbery.

Thank you! The service guy said there was no such issue and no such switch! Spoke to me like i was an ah! Hung up saying I'll just do it myself. And I did! Thank you!

I just picked this car up today. And of course get home and boom this issue. I was about to just take it back, quick google and this video just saved me that headache. Part ordered and with the help of making sure to hold the park to the left when you power off it's gold.

I agree with most of the other comments. You're video helped me diagnose the issue, and then saved me a lot of money not having to get a mechanic to do it. You're awesome guy.

very good video, took me about 30 minutes to do the whole job, saved me hundreds.really surprised how easy it was, there is a small tabe at the bottom of the switch that you need a screwdriver to pry it away the the tab retainer

Thank you! Video was perfect! For some reason though my battery died in the process even though it was quick and the only time the accessories were on was to put the shifter in a different position to move the casing. So after I replaced the part I thought I'd done something wrong because the car wouldn't start. I didn't think it was the battery at first, since it doesn't make sense the battery would have died. I went back through the whole process thinking maybe I didn't connect the wires right or had missed something. I hadn't. After a jump and a ride around the neighborhood everything was fine and it seems to be working perfectly a week or so later. Wanted to share in case others had a similar issue.

Thank you for this. I anticipated an hour of work, but it was more like 30 minutes.

Just ran into this issue, , , , I did not buy a new switch, , , , I simply put two small slivers of gorilla tape on the limit switch with the rubber bumper or putting back in park, shifter moves LEFT engaging that switch, , , , when the rubber bumper wears down to the plastic in will NOT engage...hence the gorilla tape, , , , but this video was awesome in my diag....

This has been a nagging problem in our 2014 CX-5 for at least a year, but was getting worse (more frequent) lately and I was looking for a fix other than taking it to a dealer. While I was out of town recently my wife could not turn off the car, left it as it was in the driveway, so of course dead battery by morning. Your video was just what was needed, thanks so much for the help! The part was $55.95 (Amazon/Avondale Mazda), and it took just 30 minutes to replace the part, start to finish. No problems with the procedure, except that it is difficult to remove the electrical connector from the switch. I was able to get at the connector by rotating it so the connector faced to the right side of the car, and then depressed the little locking lever with a long narrow screwdriver.

I see that the link you provided to Mazda regarding this issue lead to a service note that itself has a link to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration page showing this as a safety issue. And yet Mazda won't recall this inexpensive part and fix it for their customers, but allows their dealers to charge hundreds to fix the safety issue caused by their defective part. After this issue, and the failure of the rear differential with less than 60K miles (also a common issue with this model/year), pretty unlikely I'll get another Mazda in the future. (They did replace the differential but would not extend the warranty on it. If another one goes out now, my tough luck.)

This works. Not difficult at all. Thank you for the short and clear video. Got the part for $29 on Amazon. No more rage episodes trying to turn off the wife's car now! Thank you!!!!

Awesome information. I fixed my 2013 CX5 in less than an hour. I bought the part on Amazon for $60 delivered from some Arizona Mazda dealer. The new part had a harder black plastic piece that contacts the shifter than the old one, so hopefully it won’t get chewed up again. Thanks again. The internet always amazes me for crowd sourced solutions.
