I never really draw angst that much so I thought I should at least animate something angsty👍. That being a scene from Through the Looking Glass ruins. I debated one whether I should animate this scene or the cheek peck scene buuut I thought I'd do this scene instead cause it felt more uhh.. emotional?

I really love how they wrote Luz in this show, with this scene really summing it up perfectly. Normally, overly-cheerful, always-benevolent protagonists drive me up the wall, because they always feel hollow and fickle (see Steven Universe for a great example of this). Luz, however, is perhaps the only one I've seen who feels entirely earnest in her desire to help everyone regardless of the personal danger, and we can see this perfectly in this episode and scene. She isn't just helpful, she's straight up willing to martyr herself for her loved ones' happiness.

For much of Season 2, Luz has been trying to find some way to get home, not because she's homesick, but because she's worried about her mom's reaction to her sudden disappearance. All she wants is some way to let her know that she's okay, to put her mind at ease. When she finally thinks that she's found a way to accomplish this, Amity jumps at the opportunity to help, knowing full well the ramifications should they be caught—even spurring Luz onwards when she begins to second-guess their decision. They may not be dating yet, but the unconditional love and support between them is still exceedingly strong.

When Luz's spur-of-the-moment reaction causes them to get caught, she completely disregards Amity's prior insistence and instead blames herself entirely. Even as she believes that she has just lost her one way to contact her mom, her immediate reaction is to try and comfort Amity, who is being forced to suddenly reconcile her past with her rapidly-changing present. She doesn't make excuses, she doesn't lash out, and she doesn't try to move on as if nothing were wrong. She recognizes how important this is to Amity, as the library was not only her place of work, but her retreat from the hardships of her personal life—her abusive and controlling mother; her neglectful father; the constant pressure to succeed—her "happy place", something that Luz is fully aware the importance of. Her first thought is to make sure that Amity is okay, and when it's clear that she isn't, she instead goes to get her job back regardless of the personal danger, despite fully expecting Amity to disown her even after quite literally fighting for her job.
