I used store bought potatoes. I bought a single store bought potato in July 2020 and it took several months for it to sprout. Sprout inhibitors do exactly that -- inhibit sprouting, but they do not stop it, they just take longer. Once it sprouted, I put it in a 5-gallon bucket under a grow light over the winter. by April, I had 3 mini potatoes. Then I chitted those three potatoes, which was much easier without the inhibitor. I planted them in my garden at the end of May and now I've got four awesome potato plants in my garden.

I got lucky this year, I found a bargain at a food warehouse. A 50 lb. box of small potatoes all sprouted. Red, Yukon gold, and purple for $2.99.

Great video Luke, I saved quite a few potatoes from last year. I hadn't looked up how, just stuck them in a paper bag and put in the frig. They were fine and are the first ones up this year. This is a great idea and so cheap. Something I'll do if I don't have any of my own. Kim

Great video. As I was cleaning up my leaves yesterday, I found 7 little potatoes in my back yard that I didn't plant. I don't compost much but sometimes I do throw scraps into my flower garden - I'm sure that's where these potatoes came from. The potatoes looked perfect to eat but were green from the light. I kept them. They are starting to sprout. I live in CT and can't guarantee that the potatoes will be kept cold enough in my garage. Can I store them and replant. I'm inspired!

Thanks, Luke. I’m a seed customer of yours out in California, and it does not stay below 36 degrees during the winter. Can I keep them in the refrigerator or freezer? Maybe in a container of sand?

To manage the humidity you can also store the seed potatoes in a paper bag with a few of those "do not eat" silica packets that often are in the pockets of new clothes or bags of dehydrated foods.

What about the “certified” part of seed potatoes? How do you prevent disease like blight?

You can actually just cut the sprouting eyes off with a little bit of potato skin and use the potatoes for eating and the skins with sprouting eyes for planting. I saw it on BaconSoda's channel. It worked great!
