Spackle works great for hiding nails when painting trim molding. Lightly set your nails, spackle, sand and paint. Been using this trick for decades.

This seems to be a very good idea for those edges / projects that won't be under a great deal of use or stress. Spackle, while having some flex, is more like plaster than wood. It will not bend as well, expand and contract as wood does. If such an edge is struck (say by the back of a chair) it will crack and flake, rather than dent.

If your project is something which is more to be looked at more than "used" (picture frame / decorative shelving), this looks like a very nice trick to put in your "bag". But if you're making something that will undergo some wear and tear (drawers) and/or undergo temperature changes, I'd recommend a filler that was made for wood.

Looks really good, but is there any issue with cracking over time with use?

Thanks for this. I was going to use those iron on edge veneers. Will the spackle hold up in the long run once painted?

How well would this work with particle board edges? Or is something stronger like Bondo a better choice?

I stopped buying expensive plywoods altogether ... I have built beautiful shelving and edging using thick utility grade plywood and buckets of drywall mud. Works like a charm. Little extra work to save 100's of dollars on plywood. Sand, prime and paint. Looks just like in the rich folks houses !!! LOL

I’m spraying clear cellulose lacquer on Baltic birch over lacquer sanding sealer. I need a clear filler.

Spackle is material for the walls right? Not originally for wood. But i understand it is better to use it on wood because it dries faster. Cheaper..

Would the same apply for gel stain as well? I would assume yes.

Bad idea for application where the edge will be exposed to moisture. The sparkle will just fall apart. Better to use bondo instead.
