Mavericks @ Lakers, March 2, 2008 | The 2007-08 regular season featured one of the tightest races for western conference playoff positioning in NBA history. Both the Mavs (39-20) and the Lakers (41-18) entered this Sunday afternoon showdown looking to make a move in the standings. Kobe and the Lakers were coming off a tough road loss in Portland where their 10 game winning streak came to an end. Kobe ended the first half with 14 points but uncharacteristically left 7 points at the free throw line (3-10). He added 8 more points in the 3rd, but the Lakers were outscored 21-15 and Dallas took a three point lead to the 4th. Kobe went nuclear in the final quarter, exploding for 22 points with a perfect 13-13 from the line. After a Dirk Nowitzki three sent the game into overtime, Kobe added in another 8 points and the Lakers pulled away for good. KB ended the afternoon with his 22nd career 50+ point game, scoring 52 points on 15-27 shooting and grabbing 11 rebounds. After missing 7 of his first 10 at the free throw line, he made his next 17 to record a career-high 27 free throw attempts, making 20.

I can’t believe there’s actually people who said Kobe was never the best player in the world smh. That’s how you know they didn’t watch basketball

Jeff's prediction of Kobe grabbing the free-throw rebound over Brandon Bass is one of my favourite moments of sports commentaries. Classic.

Even the announcers know Kobe has been robbed in terms of MVP more than a few times.

Kobe was the best player in the world at that time

It’s 2008 and Van Gundy and Jackson acknowledge that Kobe has been the best “at least” the last 3-4 years. Then he went to three straight finals, winning two. These are former players and coaches, not talking heads in the media or sports writers. Guys that actually know basketball. RIP MAMBA

When nick wright and Cowherd look at their stats and say he was never the best player in the league, but the ESPN announcers watching all these games say he's been the best for the last 3/4 years and been robbed of MVP. how i hate stat boys!

This is the first ever game I've seen at staples center and he dropped 52. I was glad it went to overtime and a win

These clutch rebounds are honestly some of Kobe's best plays in his amazing career. Who knew getting a rebound could be so awesome!

you watch this and you can only say to yourself what a complete basketball player in his prime. That offensive rebound just fundamentally proved it. Yea he can score but he can dominate in games in other areas.

5:03 The most skilled player to EVER play the game. Instead of focusing on great footwork nowadays, they just take as many steps as they can get away with.

His ability to dominate a game is something that Lebron can't match Lebron is all stats n he's big and strong but I'm sorry kobe is retiring as the second best to ever play the game

😢, here after his death, he was, in some ways, better than Jordan

JVG prediction is great... but I also loved Kobe being irritated by his bad free throw shooting, then his free throw shooting becomes perfect and the big difference in securing the win...

7:35 even the announcers think it's unbelievable that the best player in the league doesn't have a mvp. You see MVP doesn't mean you're the best player in the league. Nobody would call 2 time mvp steve nash the best hell nobody cares he even has two MVPs. When i tell that to people they be like Nash got MVP over Kobe?
Kobe was the best in the league from 2002 or 03 until 2010 from then on it was LeBrons time even tho what happened in the 2011 finals isn't worthy of being called best in the world so maybe from 03 until 11. Still just 1 MVP cuz that shit is based on your team record although most ppl view mvps as individual accomplishments. That's totally wrong. Give Kobe some great teammates in his prime he'd be first in that tough western conference and have multiple mvps. Not to mention the media always hated that guy cuz of the rape charge and he didn't give any fucks about them.

Man Kobe was really a student of the game. He learned not only from MJ, his footwork from Hakeem, Hook shot from Kareem
