Honestly, as a mechanic, I think you will greatly enjoy learning how vehicles work. You have the mind of a tinkerer, and this is the perfect type of thing to stimulate it. It can sometimes be frustrating, but there is no better feeling than finally finishing the project that was giving you a problem and driving away.

And by the way, many of us Americans still prefer manual transmissions.

The Lada Niva is a classic. a lot of Hunters in Germany drive them.

They have a problem with rust and the engine is kinda underpowerd BUT its still one of the best offroad cars ever Made.

Simple yet Working soviet technology.
