Quick someone say something wrong about monster health so the saga can continue

Since he didn’t mention it, monster proficiency bonuses are based on the CR of the monster (same progression as player level). This is why monsters above CR 20 have proficiency bonuses of +7

That misunderstanding is how monster's hit dice USED TO work in 3.5e ... guess that's not the same thing in 5E.

I feel good starting with the details of monster making semi relates topics. Kinda saving these together for homebrewing

I've been watching this string of shorts, and it reminds me of the first time cracking open the DMG to modify a monster. Like opening a can of worms.

I think he was getting mixed up with 3.x/pathfinder 1e, because I'm pretty sure hit points did actually work like that back then

I said this to the other post, it is roughly 1/2 a characters level. By that it means what a certain level of a single character could fight on even footing. Higher proficiency and more abilities? Slightly less HP. It's easy enough.

Yeah that's kind of a unique thing to 5e.
It died and level could be used interchangeably in all previous editions of D&D going back to basic.

In short: Things with C/R use that insteadof lv.

An Owl Bear is C/R 3 and thus is still in the first tier of play for them.

The monster proficiency bonus is based on their CR, which is the closest thing to a "level" that they get.

I never realized the numbers in parentheses next to hp was hit dice. I thought that was just an alternative way to determine its hp.

I'm fairly sure, that is true NPCs as well as some humanoid monsters. The priest stat block if just a 5th level clerics simplified.

That was a true statement in 3, 3.5, and 4

The hit die are calculated based on the amount of people who would smash at the board of designers

That's how hit dies for monsters worked in 3.5

Challenge rating affects proficiency bonus.

So a CR 5 troll as a +3 proficiency bonus, because level 5 characters have a +3 pb.

Prof bonus scales at the same rate as levels and CR if that makes sense.

Also NPC hit die are based on the creature’s size which is why a PC wizard has a D6 hit and a barbarian has a d12 while the NPC classes from archmages to berserkers all use a d8, since medium creatures all use a universal d8.

In the before times the HD of the monsters did affect their to hit. A lot. But that was when there were different charts for to hit that progressed with HD or level and was then added to or subtracted from with the bonus/penalty applied. Back when a mage had a different chance to hit than a fighter.

Top 5 weird/interesting creatures to run to surprise a semi experienced party?

He's talking about the second edition version of their hit dice, your right that it doesn't equate and I 100% agree with your assessment here
