I'm new and have been searching for a SLOW, CLEAR explanation of calculating Hit Points. The Players Guide, IMO, doesn't really explain the fact that one has to actually roll their hit dice. I get lost in the author's verbiage, so THANK YOU.

This is super helpful!!! I'm new to D&D and playing with folks who've played for awhile. I think they forget that I'm new, so when I told them that I had never taken a short rest before, they mentioned hit dice and to keep in mind that what whatever I use only half can be gained back at a long rest. It confused me more than it helped but your video cleared it up for me. Thanks!!!

This is a great video. My group is new to DnD and we were really confused about how hit dice worked. This video explains it perfectly. Thank you!

As a new DM and player, this video has been very helpful in explaining hit points and hit dice. I literally had no idea they were supposed to be used this way. And I've scoured every book and vid I could to find an explanation. Pity there's no new vids 😞

Ok, so re healing with hit point dice: you regain half your dice after a long rest, but what happens on odd numbers?

I think you round down in D&D, so if I had a max of 3 hit dice, I'd get 1 die back on the first long rest, then the other 2 after a second long rest on another day.

hey! this is super helpful! question: when adding the con modifier, do you add it every time you roll the dice or just once to the total rolled regardless of number of hit dice used?

That transition scared the shit out of me

Thank you so much!! For the life of me I haven't been able to get it, and the PHB was making no sense, but I've got it now! Great explanation.

For those who want a concise explanation saving you 6 mins here:
Calculating Hitpoints:

How to know how many hit dice you have:

For every level your character is you gain a hit die
If you're a multiclass character e.g. lvl 5 wizard and lvl 5 bard, you get 10 hit dice
Hitdice no.= Total levels gained

How to know how much HP to gain per lvl:

Take your classes die and at lvl 1 gain the max no. on your class die and add your constitution modifier.
For lvl 1:
HP = Class die max roll + Constitution modifier
When you lvl up you roll to gain HP:
HP - Class die combined rolled number + Constitution modifier

How to heal with hit dice:

After a short rest, immediately use however many hit dice out of how many you have to heal.
Roll until satisfied or you run out of dice and add your constitution modifier onto what you healed.
Doing this uses the hit dice and cannot be used again until you regain them.

How to regain hit dice after used after a short rest:

Taking a long rest regains half your hit dice. You can only long rest once every 24 hours - 8h of uninterrupted rest.

It’s interesting how you mixed up the plural and singular of die and dice, as they are respectively… plural being die, singular being dice

Why don’t you have more videos?! I’m new to DnD and I love how you explained hit-dice and hit-points. I wish you could explain everything to me! Do you have content elsewhere?

This is great. I'm a new dm and am playing with kids under 10. They are super into the game, which is surprising. The have made it to level two and I had no idea how to actually level their hit points up.

Wait, so do you get two hit dice when you level up and can you use hit dice from a long rest to gain max hit points?
