I have a feeling them scars came from the trap Hiccup caught him with. I mean we all know he lost a tail fin due to the crash, who's to say Toothless didn't get other cuts and bruises(we can't really see) from the fall and crashed though those big trees he broke down to the ground. Poor guy must have been hurt, scared and confused. Thus, in this scene he's still recovering most likely and trying to get out and someplace he felt safe at to heal. May also be the reason he was a little more wary of Hiccup because he was hurt already.

Well he DID fall right on it, and there are scratches all over it. However I did notice how in the first movie other than the Red Death volcano part the lighter blemishes on him do show

He has difficulty walking on it due to his fall. He's in pain as soon as he puts his paw on the ground, he pulls it back to lean on his other paw😢

Poor toothless, you know when the paw had healed up, he was able to grave on the rock to climb out to save hiccup 😍😎💜!!!

I noticed that and I remember him fighting a razorwhip in the animated series in where he got slashed on that leg. Poor Toothless. 😢😢😢

Toothless likely got scratched from the sharp branches of trees he took down, shown when Hiccup got hit by one and it shows just how sharp they are. There was also i lot of rock formations that Toothless likely hit on the way down.
