I think the fact that the ending wasn't exactly what everyone wanted is the strongest part of this film. If it has gone the way we all wanted it to go it would just be a cute story with some great set pieces but by ending it the way it did I felt a great feeling of "life can't always go the way you want or expect". That they managed to have this theme without being nihilistic or pessimistic is what really made this a great film for me.

(SPOILERS)

I'm of the personal belief that Robot didnt want to rob the other robot of the experience and love that he was given from dog, in the final dream where robot visions himself reuniting with dog, you can see the other robot is clearly upset, it's likely robots subconscious telling him that though he's happy to reunite with someone who can give him love and validation in return he's taking that away from someone else, plus robot already has rascal, who clearly cares a great deal about him and gives him the love and validation that he needs. Though I would have loved to see the two reunite, sometimes we don't need a fairy tale happy ending. This ending came out very realistic and mature. I love this movie!

I haven't cried that much over a cartoon robot since Megatron killed Optimus Prime. But for God's sake, why couldn't the *four* of them be friends?!

While the ending is heartbreaking, to me, I did have a smile for the entire ride. 🤖❤🐶

Just watched this yesterday on a plane flight. Came in with no knowledge and was blown away with everything. Even tho the ending was bittersweet, I understand the compromise coming from the robot. Robot playing music for Dog to dance like they used to served as an assurance that after all that time, Dog still deeply cared for Robot and remembered their time. In the end they’re both happy. And while reuniting would make them even happier. Their new friends would be left worse off without them. And their new friends did nothing wrong, helping Dog and Robot from their lowest points

It's bittersweet movie and I like that. When I watched it, I felt like their friendship could also be read as romantic love. Nevertheless what kind of relationship the two have, they get seperated by external forces, like if a friend had to move away to study or get better at a hospital for a long period of time.

It made me wish they'd meet again before it would get too complicated to fix. But I was also aware that it isn't bad to move on, if they happened to find someone else. When the pal bot was introduced, it felt wrong to have him go through loss when he never did anything wrong, so I'm glad both of their respective partners got to stay and be happy.

For me it’s ultimately hopeful, that connections are always possible. It’s wistful at the end but there is more than one special one that we can bond with.

To me, the essence of the movie lies in its bittersweet conclusion. A happy ending would fundamentally alter its message, which revolves around portraying the reality that true love can be disrupted by life's complexities, with no one to fault, yet life goes on

My son (age 10) and I watched this last night and we join you on your state of a blubbering mess. We are still sad and seeking others interpretation, so thank you for this review.❤

It’s been more than a week since I watched this movie and I still haven’t recovered. Devastated is the correct word to describe my emotional state after watching it. But it is bitter sweet, there is hope, and the overall message is positive. The Portuguese have a word that is difficult to directly translate into English: suadade. For me, this movie expresses what that word means and manages to do it without dialogue. Amazing. I don’t remember the last time a movie left me feeling that way.

Watched Robot Dreams two days ago. It moved me too. I had to admit in the end that thing shall be allowed to go not the way I wanted. The message is so mature. I reflected a lot on my life relationships. Thank you for this review!

I feel like this movie has one of the most mature takes on relationships. I like that Robot makes the choice in the end. And while he realizes he and dog still share a bond and love for each other, he realizes that they both also have something new now that is just as important. Like I dunno its very much how in life you form strong connections and not all of them are meant to last. In a way you dont get a happy end and in a way you get 2.

I just watched it and Jesus man the whole time I was just bumping to the vibes till the beach scene where robot gets rusted and cant move and what really got me though was how robot missed dog so much to the point where he was literally dreaming abt reuniting with dog and what pulled on my heart strings was when they didn't end up back with each other like whyyy yall gotta do me like thatt lol and I relate to both of them being not able to make friends and feeling lonely and the other thing being missing someone so much this movie depicts so much that now its gonna be my comfort movie anyways all in all this movie was so wholesome but also sad as hell but in the end I enjoyed it

not friends, spoiler ahead: Only would make sense the last dream and the decision of robot of not go down is because they were a couple and now Tin and dog ar a couple and Rascal and robot are another couple. The dream, where they hug and then Robot dreams with Rascal apearing means that The releationship is monongamous, as robot intervining might mean the end of both the relationships.. Then Robot realises that Rascal as a equal relaionship with him, simboliced by the cassette tapes, but Dog was the one deciding te plans and leading ( which causes the beach incident) Robot knows Rascal loves him better.

It was so good. I cried a lot. The ending was great. It tore me apart, but it was a good ending.

Having enjoyed the movie, I tracked down the graphic novel by Sara Varon it was adapted from. It also has no dialogue and is a more concise story (a little over 200 pages) -- but well worth checking out!

Accepting life just exactly as it is can sometimes be the kindest, most loving and deeply understanding choice we can make for those we love. There's a time in love for giving, and a time for receiving. And a time for giving by letting go.

Just back from seeing it - it's a masterpiece and moved me to tears. I've never seen a movie that I both loved so much but found so moving and difficult to watch that I'm in two minds about ever watching it again. What an experience.

Thank you for this heartfelt review. I will be truing 70 in October, and I totally agree the this film is not just for kids.

Also, as someone who lived in New York at that time, “Robot Dreams” is an architecturally and geographically accurate depiction of New York in the 1980s. Throughout the movie the World Trade Center is seen in the distance. And this, I think, must be intentional as is the choice of “September” as a leitmotif throughout the film, foreshadowing what we will see as the story unfolds.

Ultimately what this movie asks us is, what happens when you open your heart to someone and that someone is taken away from you? Is it possible in the face of unspeakable loss to find happiness again? “Robot Dreams” answers this in an exceedingly mature and nuanced and complex and compassionate way. I was an absolute wreck by the end of the film, and I'm still feeling all the feels days later. And I am so grateful for that.
