Well, this version make a dark-visual that didn't appear in the 1959 version, that is Aurora is really prick her finger in the spindle till her blood is out. In the 1959, Aurora "just" touched the spindle as Maleficent commands.

The curses whisp was a callback to Maleficent shapshifting into a Will-o-wisp and the maid getting there right after she fell asleep was like the good fairies getting there right after she touched it in the original

Call me crazy, but right after the wheel assembles, does it look for a second like Aurora knows exactly what she's doing? She seems to almost square her shoulders and grit her teeth just before she starts walking forwards.
