Resilient Cities: Anticipating the Unexpected

As cities become bigger in size and population, they need to become more resilient to face risks such as natural disasters, violence, unemployment or energy and water shortages. Resilience, therefore, requires a holistic view of the city and a proactive rather than reactive approach from local governments. In this context, technology can be a useful tool to build a resilience strategy, but it also requires research, cooperation, planning and financing for its effective implementation. This session will look into the ways in which cities can become more resilient and how international institutions can additionally help cities build their resilience strategies.
