Earlier this year I reviewed the JBL GO speakers and the popular JBL Clip is your next step up to longer battery life and a more robust portable speaker. The JBL Clip 2 and 3 speakers both allow you to wirelessly stream high-quality sound from your smartphone or tablet and take crystal-clear calls from your speaker with the touch of a button, thanks to their noise and echo cancelling speakerphones.

The external design differs for both units. The JBL Clip 2 waterproof portable speaker has a carabiner secured to this chunky silicone like pivot point. It feels like it would dampen vibration when attached to something like your back-pack or your bike. On the side you have flush integral buttons for volume up and down, and a multifunction button for accepting calls, play and pause. On the other side buttons for Power, Pairing, and a micro usb port for charging. Both JBL speakers are IPX7 Waterproof which is safe to 1m depth for up to 30 minutes. The Clip 2 has a line-in cable that you can’t loose as its connected to the speaker. Good thinking! I’d be temped to use that if connecting to my laptop in preference to bluetooth.

So what’s changed on the outside of JBL Clip 3. The carabiner is built-in. They got rid of fixed line-in. Volume and play buttons have migrated to the front of the speaker.. Flip 4 the reverse of the JBL Clip 3 speaker to find a rubber feel base where the in-line 3.5m attached line-in used to be on the JBL Clip 2. Overall the new JBL speaker JBL Clip 3 may be less likely to get damaged and more robust for outdoors use, whereas the JBL Clip 2 is more versatile with more features.

Both JBL Bluetooth speakers have a single 40mm transducer.

The JBL Clip 2 output power is 3w and the Clip 3 at 3.3w. You can get slightly more volume from the Clip 3. The clip 3 has a 1000mAh battery vs 730mAh of the Clip 2. Battery life is stated at 10 hours for the JBL Clip 3 with charge time of 3 hours, and 8 hours playback for the Clip 2 with a charge time of 2.5 hours. Curiously the JBL Clip 2 has Bluetooth 4.2, and the newer unit is using 4.1. Another big plus for the Clip 2 is Wireless Daisy Chain capability. This allows you to wirelessly connect two Clip 2 speakers together for amplified sound. That feature is not available on the newer Clip 3. Pairing to your Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Galaxy Smartphone IOS and Android.
