Ally X has undergone some impressive changes:

1. It now comes with a 1TB M.2 2280 full-size SSD, making it easier to upgrade due to its affordability and easier to find.

2. It features thinner fans and 3 vents for better cooling.

3. The RAM has been upgraded to 24GB shared,
users don't have to worry about how to allocate their pool of RAM. With 16GB for the system and 8GB for the GPU, plus an upgrade to 7500MHz speeds, games should run smoother than ever.

4. It has an 80W battery.

5. Improvements have been made to the analog stick and buttons, including smaller M1 and M2 back buttons to avoid accidental presses and larger LT and RT buttons.

6. The SD slot placement has been changed.

7. The shape of the Ally X has been redesigned for better ergonomics.

8. 2 USB type C port with thunderbolt 4 so you can plug any E-gpu on it

Honestly the battery alone to me is worth the upgrade, cuz the Ally has been the best hand held in terms of performance. But it's been held back so much by the battery for me. Being able to get 60fps and play for more than 2hours is a sale for me. Cuz I can only reach 2 hours on my current Ally with 720 30fps.

I'd say it's not an upgrade but a better option for new buyers. Those who already own the 1st Ally don't need to upgrade. Thr Ally X is perfect for those who was cautious at the 1st model but impatient to wait another year for a proper new model launched, so the revision is good enough.

Asus has always been this way. I have been buying their hardware for 25 years and I hope that they improve their methods and transparency. The battery improvement and USB4 is something I have been waiting for on the Ally and this makes it an easy buy for me. Please note, I never had any hardware issue with my current 2 ROG Ally devices. I hope Asus hires more competent labor in their repair centers in North America. I still own 2 original Steamdecks, 512 and 256. I don't use them anymore eventhough I love them. Mainly because they lack a bit of power for the games I like, the original wireless adapters are weak and the fact that they produce more heat and are heavier.

How is the screen in a dark environment and at lower brightness? Love how black the Deck OLED gets without any panel bleed / glow and great picture quality at lower brightnesses. Also OLED is one thing but OLED + HDR is another consideration in your comparisons. HDR can completely transform a game.

AMD presented the R9 HX370 just 5 days ago. It uses the new graphics 890M which is 40%+ faster. We did know for some time that there was something around the corner. But the timing could not be worse - releasing the Ally X now, since these new APUs offer a tremendous faster graphics...

I like the Batt 2 usb C ports with 1 Being a thunderbolt and personally prefer VRR over OLED for the Ally

VRR is far more important!!! As long as the pannels can display the game OLED is just Good but not necessary!

As an owner of an Xbox series X, steam deck oled, and will get the Rog ally X on July 22. I’ll be set for awhile on gaming hardware.

I really want to get this. I’m the person who would use it as though it’s a laptop. Also have Xbox game pass so same reason, don’t want to buy games from steam. But will probably wait till end of the year and hopefully by then there will be discount to pick up for the holidays. Wonder if we’ll see an Xbox handheld revealed by then too

Great review. Knowing this can be used as a Windows computer does help with the high price justifying it as a multi-use machine. It is easy to get spoiled by the relatively low cost of machines like the Switch Deck and even the Steam Deck. Has the micro-SD card issues been fixed?

biggest concern with the 1st ROG Ally was the micro SD card slot not malfunctioning or killing your SD card, not battery life 😂

In terms of price to performance, the original Ally is still a better purchase, especially if you can get an open box one. While the new Ally X does address the main issue of the original Ally, it doesn't offer enough of a performance boost (same CPU) so therefore I won't be buying it. I will simply wait until the next generation of handheld PC, whether it is from Asus or another company. For now, the original Ally still performs well, and fits my use case. The short battery time isn't really an issue for me. I think a Ryzen 9000 or 10000 APU with the successor to the 780m as an iGPU (perhaps 880m, 980m, or 1080m) will really hit the sweet spot for me, as I'm sure the power efficiency of those chips, as well as a larger watt-hour battery will ultimately solve the battery issue that these handheld PC's suffer from. Imagine a handheld PC that has a 4 or 5-hour battery life instead of just 1 or 2 hours? That would be the dream.

ally x is nothing but a prototype for asus, they're seeing what's working and what's not. next year we should finally get a more powerful a handheld from asus with a bigger screen
