English Idioms with Deeper Meanings - Part 4

Idioms are an important part of the English language. It is sometimes difficult to understand the meaning of an idiom when you hear it for the first time. Idioms have both a literal meaning and a figurative meaning, yet it is the figurative meaning that is what the speaker wants to communicate. The literal meaning is not so important.

In this video, Teela explains the meanings of 5 common idioms so that you will understand them better and be able to use them more easily in your conversations with others:

steal someone's thunder
close but no cigar
under the weather
barking up the wrong tree
caught red-handed

If you can understand and use these idioms easily, then you are one step closer to English fluency. You will be more confident, too.

Teela, thank you for the lessons. I try to use the new idioms in this way:
1) I remember that when I was younger(many, many years ago), my parents make me a gift for my birthday a new bicycle . I'm very happy and would show it to my friends, but another friend totally stole my thunder with his new video game.
2) I have see my cousin drive a new car, and in the afternoon when I come back to my work, phone him for congratulate, but he answer that I close, but no cigar because a new car is of his father.
3)When I was under the weather i prefer stay at home and see many films.
4)I'm going with my car to Roma for working, suddenly I see on the other side one incident with two cars.
I pull over with my car and going to see, for help. When arrived near the car a person wake up and begin to shout me, meaning that I was the other person of incident, and I say: You barking up the wrong tree.
5) My wife follow a diet by two mounths, but yesterday I caught her red handed sing eating bread in the evening, that I know is forbidden in her diet.

Thanks and sorry for my mistake.

Hi Teela. When I feel under the weather I stop eating. This always works. In fact, a few months ago I stopped having dinner cold turkey and I feel better than never. I feel full of beans. By the way, I'm also an vegetarian. Thanks for your lovely videos.

Nice lesson Teela!! When I studied english in London long time ago, I was just 21 years old and I am now 41. I've got a lesson with one of these idioms's expression and I never forget it, I don't know why. The idiom was "Don't beat about the bush." I never forget that expression. God knows!!!

That's a very nice lesson. However I am not able to make up a story using those idioms right now. I'll think of something interesting and will be back to this page to post it. Congratulations Teela! You are the cream of the crop. Keep up the great work. Cheers :-)
