English Idioms with Deeper Meanings - Part 3

Idioms are an important part of the English language. It is sometimes difficult to understand the meaning of an idiom when you hear it for the first time. Idioms have both a literal meaning and a figurative meaning, yet it is the figurative meaning that is what the speaker wants to communicate. The literal meaning is not so important.

In this video, Teela explains the meanings of 5 common idioms so that you will understand them better and be able to use them more easily in your conversations with others:

I'm French. French language also contains a similar sentence like : To cost an arm and a leg, we say : This has cost us an arm ( not a leg) . Cela nous a coûté un bras . I suppose painters were more generous at XVIII e with French people🙂. Thanks a lot for letting us know this meaning

Hi, Your lessons are very great and very helpful. Idiom number 5 -to ride shotgun- the seat next to the driver in Hungarian is the seat of mother-in law (anyósülés). The statistics of accidents shows that the most dangerous place is this seat, so it outlines the connection between daughter -in-law and mother-in-law..

In my case, when the time to sleep is already passed but my kids would not sleep, I frequently fly off the handle. I don't want to let the cat out of the bag. But sometimes it happens accidentally. I am not proficient to pretend not knowing what I know already.

We Spanish have also a body idiom to say that something is really expensive: 'costar un ojo de la cara', which could be literally translated into English as 'to cost an eye from your face'.
