English Idioms with Deeper Meanings - Part 2

Idioms are an important part of the English language. It is sometimes difficult to understand the meaning of an idiom when you hear it for the first time. Idioms have both a literal meaning and a figurative meaning, yet it is the figurative meaning that is what the speaker wants to communicate. The literal meaning is not so important.

In this video, Teela explains the meanings of 5 common idioms so that you will understand them better and be able to use them more easily in your conversations with others:

bury the hatchet
butter someone up
break the ice
give someone the cold shoulder
don't throw the baby out with the bathwater

If you can understand and use these idioms easily, then you are one step closer to English fluency. You will be more confident, too.

Hi, I am from Brazil and I like study idioms in my free time. I watch a lot of videos in different idioms, many times with some difficult but I improve more and more everyday. About English, I studied years in different schools, I had American coach for three years without good results. It was good to travel, I didn't have problems in USA or other parts but I never got the comprehension when I watched a movie for example. Not be worries about role and grammar, no care about if I understand or not, just only try like a baby is making my english better. Videos like yours is clear for me, others not so much. Spanish in Spain is clear for me, Spanish in Argentina sometimes is a little more difficult.
the language spoken and depending on the place it is never the same as the formal language, but English did not have to be so different :).
And ... thinking that 26% comes from Latin, 26% coming from French and 6% from Greek we have 58% of familiarity and yet the English is completely different.

Hello. I am French. Three of your 5 English sentences have the same meaning in French...To bury the hatchet, French people say Enterrer la Hache de Guerre, To break the ice, briser la glace and Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, Ne pas jeter le bébé avec l'eau du bain have a lot of similar words both of these two countries. And it is really funny To figure out the origin of these sentences.Thanks you a lot for letting us know all these things.

l know all about 5 idioms, Agora vou falar sobre mim em português aos (47) resolvi aprender inglês e sozinho, fiquei (3) anos assistindo Ted sem nenhuma legenda ou tradução, me tornei ( Analfabeto em inglês) ileterate, depois entrei Para uma escola de renome para aprender ler e escrever, somente o Diretor nativo, me dava aulas, ele me disse vc speak inglês Very fast, é minha língua só eu sei o que vc esta falando, a maioria dos professores lá de todos os cantos do mundo, só sabiam dizer pra mim ( what?) 7 meses depois ele me pediu para sair da escola já havia me ensinado o básico, e disse: que eu levaria 20 years para aprender ler e escrever em inglês, então tive que sair da escola, porém novamente sozinho consegui aprender a ler e escrever de tudo em inglês em mais (3) más eu não gosto de escrever em inglês. o Deepenglis me ajudou muito, Gratitude 🙇
