Gutter maintenance would be so much easier if they were on the ground 😁. One tip would be to get a ladder standoff as they are invaluable to give you that space away from the wall and especially useful for gutter work.

It's been a while since I've needed to go up a ladder, but If I don't have someone to foot the ladder, if it's on soft ground like yours appear to be, I place a batten across the bottom and fix in place with pegs driven into the ground

I think you gutter issues will come back. The problem (I believe) is thermal management. The gutter will expand and contract as you mentioned, but if the joints are too far apart such that gutter section can move so that it can pop out one end or the other it eventually will. When installing you need to push gutter up to the marked gutter line on the joints, the joints need to be secured with screws so that they are fixed. if a gutter section moves around, due to thermal expansion and contraction, it can never pull out completely of either joint.

I have never installed gutter, but I had an "expert" do it for me. But when expansion and contraction start causing issues with the gutter popping out of joints. Being an engineer, I did some research so I could understand the problem so he could correct it. In my cause the unions where not secured on a long section (15m). After expansion and contraction the gutter had walked one way, being able to pull completely out of one union. Securing the joints means the maximum movement of any one section is limited, so the gutter can't pull out. BTW: my gutter "expert" didn't understand exactly what I was telling him and didn't do exactly what I asked him to. So to completely fix the problem I ended up a ladder myself to do the job right - its now been more than 5 years and I've had no need to revisit the gutter other than mucking out.

I really like your videos - somehow you make you activities interesting to watch.

Hi there
what are the length of the ladders you used?
Thanks

Another great vid. What height are your ladders? Or what height would you recommend for a standard 2 storey uk council house?

I have just paid 60 quid for a aluminium scaffold tower and built it myself as I have to go up and repair or replace a Union Bracket leaking. Not going to lie, sketchy is not the word, standing on scaffold which would be equivalent to a 2 storey house, no bother, going through the trap door and climbing up one more floor is not one for the faint hearted 😅 I may get a handy man up there instead. Got the scaffold, got the part, just not got the legs 😂

Plot twist, he has a detached house and is still going around moving the gutters!

If it came loose by itself won't it just happen again?

Yeah, nah - standing with 2 feet on the bottom of the ladder is going to do fuck all for safety. Also probably a good idea to use standoffs for the ladder with rubber bumpers not to damage the wall.
