That's one of the basses that burned in a fire in his barn/studio. The day after the fire he was in New Haven with King Crimson at the Palace (now the College Street Music Hall, a great venue) and he had a totally crisped bass on a stand on stage.

Why Thank you Tony Levin. Note how Tony Levin rests his left thumb on the bottom of the neck. There are two reasons for that. One it is the most comfortable position to some players which includes me and number two your fingers hit the sweet spot for brightness and clarity. How would I know that is because my first Bass Player lesson book was by Carol Kay. Carol Kay wrote Use The pick over the pick ups and the fingers exactly where Tony Levin AND ME !! finger pick the Strings. I have gotten a lot of stupid questions and ridicule from Guitar players who say they think I should be picking lower by the bridge. I usually just say ok. Most Guitar players are very sensitive and their feelings may get bruised and they will become unhappy if they are criticized as well or even a simple Piss Off Mate.
