I would listen to this man. He's been around the block a few times, not to mention he is a stellar bassist.

Definitely one of my favorite players. From John Lennon, King Crimson, Gabriel and Stickmen are just a few I can think of off the top of my head that Tony Levins bass and stick work is on another level

Tony Levin is 100% correct. I did exactly what he said to do and some gigs were crap some were over my head, and I always played with guys older and more experienced which helped me get to level of a pro player. Ive been able to have a career as a bass player. Sessions, tours, playing on commercial jingles. Instrument endorsement, I played wirh artists on Curb records, Warner bros records, played Carnegie Hall, the Ryman Auditorium, the Grand ol Opry, arena's, Performing Arts centers, Theaters, etc... I have a Gold record. So yes, play with as many different players and musical styles as you can.
Ill add this. Be preoared as a musician. Learn your Instrument well, be able to read chord charts, number charts and written notation. Have good ears as well. And have a command of a variety of musical styles even If its not your cup of tea.

100%. Play those things you hate, and with better musicians, because it absolutely will make you better.

Best advice to freelancers in any field - say yes, if the job is shit just suck it up and do the best job you can, you never know someone else doing the same job is probably also trying to move upwards and you never know who's going to remember you and give you a call.

Same in reverse, you never know who's going to remember you so never treat a gig/job like it's beneath you because that's how you'll be remembered...

You know how hard it is to make it as a bass player.

I quit taking rejection and just play whatever I want to play, whenever I want to play. Too many egos in my town. I don't have to play with those people who possess a dim view of me. I tell it like it is whether they want to hear it or not.
