Показать описание
In this video, we are comparing Ancient Egypt vs. Mesopotamia in all sorts of different aspects. We will be looking at the similarities and differences between the geography of the two regions, the phenomena of the flooding Nile vs. the flooding Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and how the geography and cultures within the regions worked differently in expansion and conquest. We look at the single unified culture of the Ancient Egyptians, their art, architecture and religious beliefs in comparison to the ever-changing political and cultural climate of Mesopotamia, a region rife with conquests and new dominant empires. This video will also explore the social structure of the numerous Mesopotamian cultures vs. the strict social hierarchy of Ancient Egypt, and the similarities between the pantheon of gods, and the differences in their beliefs for the afterlife.

Did any of the similarities between the two civilisations surprise you? Why do you think these two completely different geographical regions had so many similarities? Let us know what you think!

I finally ordered the Lamassu t shirt. I was a member of the old format, the ancient encyclopedia for many years and it was the one website that I frequently visited.
Anyway, another excellent video. Thought provoking, interesting, and very well narrated. Very clear. Thanks Kelly and your entire team.

Dear Kelly You are saving my life. I have returned to school after 40 years and am really struggling until I found your videos. I would like the transcript of one or two but when I press the Transcript Button nothing happens . I would be happy to pay for them but did not see them offered in the store. Could you please tell me if they are available. I have been typing along with your lecture, you are so good. Thank you so much for what you do.

I know nothing about these civilizations. But I must begin learning more. I took a DNA test and found out I have possible relatives from Morocco, Egypt and Iraq. And it is very interesting.

I wouldn't say that Mesopotamia had "different cultures, " in fact, the only unifying factor in Mesopotamia was their culture. I believe it would be more precise to say that Mesopotamia was separated by their staunchly independent city states. Keep in mind, these city states, especially early on in the Sumerian era, weren't made up of different people, but merely had different institutions ruling each city.

Of course, this is not to say that Mesopotamia remained made up of just one ethnic group or people, and I'm sure if you're watching this video you'd know what I'm talking about. Point is, culture was pretty much the same throughout Mesopotamia for much of it's history, but governments split.

1) Sumerians weren't the first to develop writing. This is a fatal textual error by historians.

2) The oldest poetic texts weren't Gilgamesh (2000 BCE), but the Pyramid Texts of King Weni (2400 BCE)

Was the Mesopotamian vision of the afterlife really so bleak? I mean, I believe there's nothing when you die, but wandering around in twilight and dust drinking from puddles? I wouldn't be able to get out of bed in the morning.

There are connections during the Pre-Dynastic Periods in both cultures.

I think its a worthy mention that while hebrews did not build the pyramids, it's certainly true that the Israelite people spent centuries doing construction work for the ancient Egyptians. Instead, they were likely involved in building new cities and other projects within Egypt's vast empire.

hello Kelly, I was assigned to compare both Mesopotamia and Egypt for a report, and when I found this Video, I just took the words from it and treated it as my own, my teacher quickly noticed it and I was scolded for it, I plagiarized your video and I want to say that I am sorry for it
