In order to have completed the giant race known as life, you must have learned to rely on others in order to truly “live” in this race and life. You cannot win this race, nor truly understand it, until you pass a baton to someone you truly trust to complete the race with the same motivation as you.. so many people gave the baton to each other and to akira, they all knew how to rely, to love, and to empathize to one another. Satan could never get thru the race, he could never truly experience life, nor ever hold onto the baton, he was in an unrecognizable metaphor supressed by his demonic feelings. It was in front of him, he just didnt have the guts to take on the race

Dude it's not about the death order. They try to reach to Ryo and he just doesn't understand what love means. When he realized, it was too late. Ryo you should've taken the damn baton.

This breaks my heart, it’s the most memorable scene to me. It’s symbolic in this scene that Ryo loved and was loved but he just didn’t understand the concept. If Ryo had only realized earlier what love was and had accepted the baton, none of this would’ve happened.

You just needed to take the damn baton Ryo

This part was honestly sad, got me even though they hadn't totally earned the emotional appeal given who fast it ramped up and how short the show was. They tried so hard to reach him, yet they failed. It took Kira's death to reach him, when it didn't matter at that point. Tragic.

this part is even sadder realising they're passing the baton in order of them dying, which is why ryo never took it, later on sadly being forced to suffer without akira. ;

I JUST REALIZE THAT EVERYONE WHO TOOK THE BATON DIED IN THAT ORDER EXCEPT FOR RYO BC HE DIDNT TAKE IT

i feel like this insinuated that humanity had been wiped out at least twice trying to teach Ryo the value of love.

Ive seen a theory saying that the baton here resembles love. Miko gives Miki the baton, Miki gives it to Akira and Ryo didn't take it. Because in episode 10 he said that love didn't exist. But after Akira dies, Ryo cried and it means that he took the baton.

Am I the only one who loves looking at the frame where Ryo looks at Akira confusedly? He's so adorable

Before: "get in the fucking robot, Shinji."
Now: _"take the fucking baton, Ryo!"_

The video “mikis last run” I saw someone say “The baton was passed in order of deaths but Roy dropped it” wow.

The fact that they all passed the Batons in the order of their deaths and it didn’t make it to Ryo is just- feelings are hurt man.

You know how there was a part that showed Miko, Miki and Akira passing the baton? Yeah. That's the order they died in. And Ryo never took the baton in the end.

I know symbolism yayaya, but every time I saw it I just imagined Ryo smacking it out of Akira’s hand like a cat.

What’s wild is that the studio that did this also made Japan Sinks 2020 and they both have similar baton pass scenes that involve *spoiler*
