Will, are you aware you can underlay the reference track in VST Span? Select default preset >Routing> Input routing> Select ch 3&4 at IN3& IN4> Choose a colour on underlay and sidechain your reference in the device window. 👍

Damn, I’ve always been caught up in the high and low end. I’ve always wondered why it sounded terrible on smaller devices. Thanks Will! 🔥

I gaped!!! How much fuller the whole spread sounds from mixing just the mids… really brought the bass and highs out too!! 😮

Your videos are so incredibly helpful. I actually take notes because I'm such a slow learner. Thanks for the work you put into making these.

for mastering i also use a plugin ( sound id) it really helps. it even lets me master properly on headphones. it saves a ton on expensive hardware. basically it looks at the frequency response and corrects it for headphones. for monitors you can get a mic and measure to make them flat taking into acount your room acoustics.

Wow, this was exectly the 'problem' I ran into lately... tracks sounding sweet on my home system but terrible on devices like an Iphone or tablet... thank you so much for sharing! ;))

I'm doing something similar. Actually, the template I use to start each project has plugins on the master and reference tracks that I periodically enable and disable when comparing various parameters, including EQ for the mid-range, among others. It really helps to create a mix that will translate better on smaller speakers, phones, and laptops.

I've learned about this technique before, but I like your approach a lot. Going to apply to this to track I'm working on now. Thanks!

Seems like a useful methodology. I'll probably approach it a little differently since I use Sonarworks, and could just use the "smartphone" setting to toggle the eq on an off. I already use many of the presets in the translation check, but this video shows the benefit of using them earlier in the process, instead of leaving them to the end like I've been doing.

I definitely think that has helped. I have most trouble with bass though. Small monitors and good headphones. My mixes sound muddy in the low end on really subby systems so looking forward to watching that video.

since I mix with midrange and this technic, my product is taking a step up with general balance, tone and clarity, and I'm sure now that it's translating the right way, again thx you will !

Hey will, can you make a video of how and when using a limiter (not specially on the master bus but with sounddesign or instrument busses). would be really awesome, because i always wonder, how to use it as a compressor or in a chain with them. Best Regards

Plugin Boutique's Adptr Plugin does this kind of setup. You can drop the master by minus how many dBs, it has filters a mono button, you can check the stereo width of the master and compare it to your mix, you can load in multiple references it's very cool 👍
