I had a 1962 lawn boy lawn mower that my brother in-law borrowed when I wasn't home. he ran it out if gas and put regular gas in it. it locked up the engine. I shot some WD-40 in the cylinder and got it to free up and got it running. I used for 10 years after that.

Take a Sharpie and write 50:1 gas mix next to fuel filler cap. Works for me.

I worked as a landscaper for years, this one summer my boss hired this college student and he was the type of person who knew everything and never asked questions, I think he thought it made him look dumb or weak to ask questions. After about 2 weeks of working there he messed up big time. He was supposed to mix the 2 cycle with 5 gallons of gas. We had the bottles of 2 cycle that the whole bottle mixed with 5 gallons made the ratio we needed for the weed whackers, blowers, saws, whatever. He poured the gas into the blue gas can but didn't add the oil, then he topped off the 4 leaf blowers, we were doing spring cleanup so we used the blowers more than anything. 3 of us grab the blowers and start going, one by one they each died. All within about 10 minutes of each other. We quickly realized the problem but it was to late the damage was done to 3 of the 4. We were able to dump out the 4th gas tank since it had not been run yet.

Interesting! I was given a FS260C by a family friend and told they had run it on fuel without enough oil in it.
Basically they ran out of two stroke oil and put what they had in it and said. That will do.
It ran less than a minutes and ceased. The Stihl shop said beyond economical repair.
This machine cost in excess of $1500. So I pulled it apart and found a hole in the piston and and ring pieces everywhere including blocking the crank shaft.
To my surprise I washed out the crap in a parts washer, found the bore was still perfect. I replaced the piston (which was hard to find) and put it back together and it works fine. If it was a cheap machine I may not have bothered but glad I made the effort to save it.

I once bought power tools from Stihl that were inexpensive gas powered tools. I found they were under powered, weak & hard to start. I sold it all & bought their commercial tools. They have plenty of power, easy to start & a joy to use. They will never see the use they were intended for. I used to get raised eye brows for buying a Stihl 361 for cutting wood around the yard. A Stihl 110 combi for a string trimmer & a BR 600 leaf blower. I also have a 110 10' sticksaw with a 6' magnesium extendable shaft. They asked why I bought it? I said I'd find a use for it. Sure enough it works great cutting the neighbors sticker bushes back 16' standing in my yard. I only have to do it once a year.
Great content! I look forward to more of your videos!

I'm in lawn care and have gotten preoccupied and put straight gas in my trimmer. I was fortunate enough to notice the color before I used it and used it and did the cardboard test, I think you recommended.

I got lucky once, girlfriend's son strait gassed a FS45 Stihl, no idea how long he ran it, but it didn't seem to hurt it. It was an older machine, no idea if that had any impact on the results. It still runs good, it's over 10 years old.
Got really lucky with that one.

Hi Dony, Just wondering what your take is on premium fuel now in Ontario for Stihl 2 strokes. Haven't been able to find ethanol free 91 since summer 2023. i used to use it with the Stihl oil for my home machines. I am almost out, and everywhere around me is 10% ethanol it seems even in the 91. I use about 2 gallons of it /yr between my 2 stihl machines. I buy the fuel about 20L at a time and date it and add stabilizer to it as soon as I get home. I use that to mix about 750mL of 2 stroke fuel at a time and store it in a aluminum fuel bottle. I know the fuel bottle is not compatible with ethanol so I will have to find a different container for my mix fuel

"My wife put straight gas in it"

i've never understood this. is it just the materials are softer and that's why they get beat up like that? or what causes the scoring and damage?

Awesome! I had some guy dropping off a near new Husqvarna saw with tungsten chain. After 5 weeks and 5 different parts replaced he finally admitted to lending it next door and they ran it with straight gas.

I once sold a well serviced 2 stroke motor scooter that had served me for 4 years without a single problem. A week later the buyer turns up complaining that the engine seized on him after just 20 miles. I immediately knew what had happened and told him it's his problem. Some people should be kept well away from technology.

My Stihl leaf blower is at least 25 years old and still starts right up. Sometimes it will smoke a little bit because I got the mixture a little off but I guess I've never really damaged it. For weed whackers, this spring, I went electric and I will never go back to fuel. They are light, not noisy and for my yard it is perfect.

I'm betting the owner never read the manual. Didn't even glance at it. smh.

Don,
Thank you for this. The only 2 stroke I have is a Stihl BR420. I mix my own and use the Stihl Ultra 50:1 oil
Wow the MotoMix and TruFuel at $30-$40US per gallon!

someone gave me a riding mower once that had been water glassed (sodium silicate, the "cash for clunkers" engine killer) without telling me . when i finally busted the piston loose w/block of wood and 5lb hammer, the piston and cyl looked like the piston in the vid .

I have a Stihl MS260. The fuel cap is less then a year old and it failed. I got a new one but kept the old one. Does Stihl or an after market company sell just the gaskets for the fuel cap or do I have to buy a new cap each time?
