Phil Donahue, an innovative TV host who rose to fame in the late 1960s after being the first person to interact with a studio audience and bring new ideas into American living rooms, died Sunday, his family said.

The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed, though his family said he'd been suffering from a "long illness."

"Groundbreaking TV talk show journalist Phil Donahue died Sunday night at home surrounded by his wife of 44 years Marlo Thomas, his sister, his children, grandchildren and his beloved golden retriever Charlie," said a statement from his family.

"Donahue was 88 years old and passed away peacefully following a long illness."

I submitted a topic to the Phil Donahue show in January of 1982. The producers decided to make one of their shows about this, so I was invited to attend. They offered to pay for me and a guest to fly to Chicago, but we decided to drive and I was reimbursed for travel expenses of gas money. The producers paid for our overnight stay at a hotel also. Just before the show, we were invited back stage to meet Phil with a small group of other guests. He was the most handsome, kind and sweet host! Very personable and charismatic! He was very gracious and grateful for our input into this show. A wonderful and exciting experience and cherished memory! God’s blessings to his wonderful soul and to his precious wife and family!

I was working at a restaurant and when he and his wife left he patted me on the shoulder. I had tried to give his wife a compliment about a TV movie that she had done, but she was trying to talk to their guests. The fact that he acknowledged me meant a lot. Phil Donahue was a kind man. R.I.P. ✨✨❤❤

It was 1980 and I had just given birth to my sweet little daughter "Chrissie." Anyway, Phil Donahue came on every morning about 10:00 am and that's when I would be nursing little Chrissie. What a wonderful memory! Phil and my sweet little baby! You were the best Phil!!!! Prayers going to you and beautiful Marlo.

I went to the Phil Donahue show in Chicago in the early 80s and he singled me out of the audience for some reason, was so kind! A few years later my friends and I were exiting Wrigley Field and saw him, I greeted him saying what fans we were of him and how we were from the Northside and huge fans! He was most appreciative! In heaven now❤️

Phil was "one of a kind." His energy and the way he interacted with his audience played a big part in why his show was so successful. " Is the caller there?" Rest in peace Phil.💓😥💐

I folded clean diapers, dozens of them, it seemed every day and watched Phil Donahue’s daily talk show! He literally kept me sane and hopeful! The first man I ever thought truly understood women! Love you always Phil Donahue and thank you Marlo for taking such good care of this wonderful, incredible American treasure! RIP

A real gentleman. Never dirty his show with swearings. Real interest in causes & people. Entertaining from beginning to end. No plastic people eager to show their face hoping to be discovered. R.I.P. Phil, you’ll be remember always. As a Catholic man with substance & respect. 👍👏🙏

I remember watching the Phil Donahue show as a little girl. I don’t think I was even seven years old, but he was such an interesting man. He kept my attention and I thought his glasses were kind of cool too along with his hair. Rest in peace, and may God comfort those who he left here.

I used to watch Phil Donahue regularly. He was a VERY SMART and WELL INFORMED talk show host and I for one, miss those days when Intelligence and Integrity mattered more than a person's race or gender.
May you Rest In Peace Mr. Donahue.
