Have you made sure that your first person controller is above the plane before hitting play? It's sometimes a bit below or looks fine but is inside the actual plane and this will make you fall straight through.

hey, so i have unity 4.1.2, i was following these steps and it works fine except i get a warning saying "There are 2 audio listeners in the scene. Please ensure there is always exactly one audio listener in the scene.". not sure whats going on....
