I am forever grateful for these courageous women. It's an enormous shame that women are still fighting some of the same battles they had to fight.

Alchemy was as much a psychological system as it was material. The "lapis philosophorum" was the perfect bridge between the physical and the psychological. Anyone in possession of the stone would attain the ultimate "mind over matter" control of nature, not just the rather simplistic "lead into gold." Female alchemists possessed a holistic psyche that differed markedly from the male "power centered" psyche. More pragmatically, many if not most alchemists were also outstanding note-takers and formed the original basis for the scientific method. In some ways, alchemy is still part of our lives- every physical act we perform begins as a psychological impetus.

I have never heard a story where "the mark of the chosen one" was being a hermaprodite. Seems like a cool concept I had never considered. I mean, I belive the odds of being born that way are smallar of those to be born with a cool scar or some other more popular "chosen one" marks.

The great ancient text manga called 'Fullmetal Alchemist' has more information than a person could possibly Ever Need on the subject of alchemy.

WOW! What a great topic, Mr. Whistler et al. Now I am going to do further research on some of these people, because the science sounds really cool. And maybe re-watch Full-Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. That show deals with not only alchemy, but also the homunculus. Great show, should you ever want to watch it :)
