Because motor oil travels all through your engine, analysis of the used oil can tell you what’s happening inside the engine. Lake Speed Jr is a certified lubrication specialist and oil analysis expert. With over two decades of experience in engine building, dyno testing and oil formulating, Lake can help you hear your engines story just by taking a sample of the used oil, and you don't need a PhD to understand the results.

Lake guides you through the process of used oil analysis - Taking The Sample, Submitting The Sample, Reading The Report and using the power of Trend Analysis.

Here are some links to videos that describe the whole process.

Next oil change. I'm sending you a sample

Wow, so glad I found your channel! I will be getting my oil tested by YOU!

BTW, I rode go carts in Jackson as a kid, sadly only once, but it was my best, most favorite memory ever of something my aunts and uncles and I did when visiting my grandparents in Clinton!! I begged them to take me again, but it never happened. Now I'm 55, have a BIG heavy 'go cart' that I drive on track, plus 2 go carts in the shop needing work. One racing shifter cart, and one old cart I'm converting for off-road and adult size. But, alas, I have far more projects and dreams than I have time retirement is not far away.

Seeing Lake Speed Jr., just feels like seeing an old friend! Thanks!

I 100% agree with used engine oil analysis!! Case in point: My 01 pristine Grand Cherokee 4.0L(brig owner, meticulous maintained) blew up both of its #1 piston oil skirts at 152K.2/2022. Jasper eng installed, 27K(2yr and 3 months) subsequent with 8 full Syn oil changes- with all 8 analyses(Blackstone Lab), this rebuild had essentially failed. Very early on with intermittent 0-5 psi oil pressures at idle and in the last 4 months signif antifreeze consumption. Blackstone reports convinced me(in the early analyses) that the motor was going to fail and with the last 2 reports convinced my mechanic and ultimately Jasper that this rebuild had essentially $hit the bed. Warranty exercised and another Jasper installed 5/9/24 at $0 out of my pocket. Now almost 500 miles on it with conventional oil, ALL subsequent full syn changes will again be analyzed.
NOTE: Despite my mechanic have possession of all 8 analyses- when he pulled the valve cover and showed me he said “looks like you never changed the oil-hahaha”. Completely thick/black and scoopable with a spoon.

Lake Speed, Jr proves how an inexpensive oil test can save your $10, 000 engine if you can test your oil at SPEEDdiagnostics- please consider.

if you can't change your oil very frequently. And by watching his videos, you'll know the right oil for your engine. I've never learned so much in such a short period of time from one man.

Speeddiagnostics for the win!

I’ve used SPEEDiag twice now. Quick turn around, easy to read reports. From my understanding, they use better test methods than some of the other UOA labs for more accurate test results. If I were being picky, I just wish there were kits for the guy sending in only one sample every 6 - 12 months. Either single sample kits, or kits with 3 - 4 submissions in mind with more than one postage label. All in all, great service. I definitely recommend it if you care at all about those “whispers” your engine is giving you. I do and I use it to help guide the maintenance/service on my 997.1.

If you don’t do a break in oil change and stick with manufacturer recommendations, then test the oil at their change, would you have a case to present the test results and make a complaint if it has already done some damage?

Lake, my brother and I each have one of the new GM 3 liter Duramax engines and the popular 1500 series pickups. I’m getting 30+mpg. It uses 0W-20 Dexos D oil. So far there are only a handful of companies that make this oil. The way I understand it, it’s the particle filter in the exhaust that dictates a lot of the additive package in this oil so that during regeneration all the soot gets burned off and very few metals are left to plug the filter. Can you test this oil and see what it’s all about ? Thank Larry

I'd like to know why "modern" engines don't have full flow oil filtering. My poly-head 318 did, and whenever the oil started to look cruddy and dark a simple 20 mile highway run cleaned it up.

Howdy. I would be interested in a 2 stroke oil comparison ?

I have a 2021 Jeep ecodiesel. Manual says it should have 5w40 MS-12991 and API SN. Can you explain the SN rating, and how does it differ from A.P.I CF-4, CG-4, CH-4, CI-4, CI-4 Plus, CJ-4, SH, SJ, SL, SM. What do all these ratings even mean? Also, is SN a gasoline engine designation?

I analyzed the engine oil of my Suzuki 1.4 GDI turbo petrol, after 3200km the volatile fuel in the oil was 4.5%, after 5300km it was 6.4%.
Obviously the viscosity has decreased a lot but all the other parameters are good, especially the wear metals.
Is it possible to reduce the dilution problem by using combustion improvers?
Alternatively I was thinking to using a more viscous oil to compensate the dilution, from 5w30 to 5w40...
