Perception is huge when it comes to diet. I wouldn’t have believed it until my husband was faced with a health issue. My solution would have been to go Whole Foods plant based with an emphasis on fresh greens, he thought that’s the way we had been eating and blames the diet for his cancer. I do the grocery shopping and most all of the meal prep and I was kicking myself for always going to the old standbys; pizza, nachos, beyond burgers, breaded garden chicken sandwiches, etc. We had also been eating lots of impossible breakfast sandwiches, processed vegan cheeses, crackers and tortillas made from refined grains, a fair amount of foods made with cane sugar. I stayed vegan, but he had started eating eggs and dairy cheese. We have a large family and have people over for dinner often plus we have two teenager in the house so I would cave and stock up on simple, quick foods instead of healthy foods. We did have fresh juices, smoothies and salads. But not a day went by in which he did not have some sort of refined grains or sugar. But he swears he tried the whole food plant based diet and it failed him…I would not have believed it if it wasn’t happening to me…I still can hardly believe that’s what he truly thinks….an enigma. I’m sure several study participants follow the dietary guidelines and now I’m equally as sure that many do not follow them, but think they do. He’s smart in many ways, but didn’t understand how the macro percentages were based on caloric value, not volume. I have since switched to a WFPB diet and am starting to see many positive changes. Thank you for the relevant and informative discussion!

I love how Dr Chris Gardener is so happy and enthusiastic, he really loves the science. Such fun among all the nutritional squabbling.

He is the most conscientious guest, "I'll tell you if you ask me, " "We can go there if you would like me to." And he's great.

As a nurse, as a vegan, as someone quite interested in nutrition, I found this interview to be fascinating and very educational. Thank you, gentlemen! 👏👏👏❤

I have been vegan a number of years and I have been training for a marathon and lately I have been struggling with what I thought was a protein intake issue, but listening to this reminded me that there have been other stubble changes that I have made due to being busier, eating processed bars over fruit as snacks, eating wraps with processed grains over salads, etc. This was so motivational to get back to some of my basics. Thank you!

What an episode!!!! Gold! I eat legumes and beans every day, I am a non-professional runner and I cannot say with words how great a plant-based diet has been for me in every sense.

Glad to hear Dr. Gardner extolling the wonders of beans. High protein, high fiber, low glycemic, low cost. And so versatile and tasty and abundant in variety. What's not to like?

All hail the humble bean! I believe it can feed the world.

Such a positive talk! As a 50 year old vegan of 27 years and still training 6 days a week, I think all his statements hold truth.

I love 'It Depends' as a title. And as a health coach it's my answer to so many questions from clients and they're not happy to hear it. But we're living organisms in a complex environment and it will always depend.

Thank you for making this video! I just got another blood test and my protein levels are perfect! For the past 13 years I have eaten fruit for breakfast fruit for lunch and dinner has been LOTS of fruit with some greens! 13 years ago and I was overweight, had cystic acne, eczema all over my body, horrible migraines and many more health issues. I was also pre-diabetic and fainting back in 2010. Since giving up processed foods, meat and dairy and going raw.... EVERY single one of my health issues have gone away and I have lost 60lbs! He is telling the truth!!!!

At 65, I am extremely fascinated by food and nutrition chemistry in a way that I never expected. Having been a vegetarian for almost 40 years then switching to a diet that reduces the few animal products I once consumed down to a fraction of what I had, has been surprising.

As I'm sure many can relate, my goal is to feel good as I age, not to prolong my life. Realizing that food is a necessity but it is also medicine and can benefit or undermine our quality of life, is a major inspiration to make optimal choices, regularly.

If you want an "n of 1" long term study I am it. I graduated High School 1967 and weighed 135 lbs/29" waist/19.5 BMI. Now 55 years later I weigh 135 lbs/29" waist/19.5 BMI. Mediterranean Diet "mostly " plant based BUT with some healthy meat, fish, cheese and eggs. Had a colonoscopy 9 years ago other than that my last doctors visit was in 1969. One $4 prescription for antibiotics for root canal in my adult life. Balance is the key.

All my life food as been an issue, a huge one. I started dieting in my teens and continued all my life. Did most fad diets. I’ve turned 60 this year. I went plant based whole food in 2015, I weighed close to 200 pounds and lost about 35 pounds. I fell off the wagon mostly at work where im fed. So I still did the yo-yo because of the very restrictive approach I tried to loose the fat gained at work and still did the yo-yo…
I have watch this specific podcast about 50 times since it was posted. Christopher Gardner’s message and studies are fascinating. His approach is so different and he seems to think outside the box in the parameters of his studies.
It just makes sense! Its simple advise.
Whole foods (not processed)
It’s basically a low calorie density diet.
And it makes me think of what Dr McDougall says about all animals having a specific diet to thrive on.
There is a bunch of geese resting in the park I’m sitting at now and none of the geese are obese they all look pretty much the same and they eat very simple unprocessed food!!!
Intermittent fasting, macros, food restrictions, miracle substance and vitamins I’m so fed up of being obsessed with food in an unhealthy way… There has to be a simpler way to get leaner and healthier without being consume by the whole thing.🙄why is it so hard!

Coming from the 80/10/10 macronutrient ratio school, this is the most scientific study I have ever seen .

I have consumed countless hours of nutrition and health related content via professional interviews on podcasts/YouTube as well as books and studies and this has been one of the best interviews I've come across. You two just about covered the whole gamut. The only thing that was left out on this interview is the benefits of organic or regeneratively raised versus conventional with regards to nutritional content and the damaging effects on our microbiome and the environment. Thank you for a great interview I can share with friends and family that will cover a great deal of information and supports what I've been telling them the last few years. Hopefully one of these days I will no longer be the crazy one and people will realize I've honestly been trying to help them improve their health!

I love that he mentions a test looking at which diet works best for which people based on genotype. As long as i eat whole foods, unprocessed, vegetable forward, low grain and supplement with fish, egg protein, I do great!
I am 66, healthy, active and strong. I have learned to eat a good quality diet that works for me.
Let's stop the battle around which is better vegetarian, vegan, carnivore. It's about how to feed YOUR body in the way that promises your greatest health and well-being.

When Kenny Rogers and Richard Branson decided to have a child all those years ago, they would surely have never imagined he would go on to become a world-renowned scientist. It’s a heartwarming story.
