How to remove and install a bicycle chain quick link

A few tips on removing and installing a quick connect link, missing link, Etc. on a multi speed chain. Most common chains (SRAM, Shimano, Whippermann and KMC) include these connector links with new chains, and are available aftermarket wise from all said manufacturers as well. The quick links are available in several different widths. Most 3/32" chains (6,7 and 8 speed) use the same size link. There are seperate individual sizes for 9, 10 and 11 speed chains, so make sure you use the correct quick link for your chain.

Thanks for the tip about using torque through the drive-train to close the master link! Had been trying to do it by opening the master link pliers but it wasn't working. Sorted now...

Thanks Joey, I've been trying to a few hours to close my chain using the tool! Your method of bringing the link to the top and holding the wheel worked first time.

Those Shimano 11/12 speed links are tight! I had tried applying torque though the crank as you showed, but wasn't confident enough until seeing you do it. Cheers!

Joey, you are a life saver. Have the equivalent of 2 1/2 chains threaded on my recumbent ... only to realize that I forgot what to do w. the master links. :( Then I watched your video ... duh! FWIW, have a set of pliers that both remove & attach the master link; didn't need them for the later, since a quick pull did the job.

thanks for the video, to lock it, it is easier to do it while the quick connect is on the top not bottom.

Thanks for the tip on installing! I had been struggling for 30 minutes to get a new Shimano "quick" link to close and did it with your method on the second try. I had to squeeze them together with some pliers a bit because the they wouldn't seat far enough on to the pin at first.

I'm just wondering about the direction of the arrow it seems to me it would not make any difference as I can't see reason why it would matter both sides look exactly the same, any thoughts, great video you make it look easy

Just to be clear, not all KMC links are reusable. KMC makes two models of 10-speed links; the CL559R and the CL559. The CL559R link (the one you have in your hand) is reusable as denoted by "R". The CL559 link is NOT reusable.

On the trail/road you can disconnect one of those with a string that's about the thickness of a shoestring. Search youtube to see what I'm talking about.

to totaly lock it in you have to hold the wheel and turn the pedals?

Was it true that KMC missing links were designed to be just a 1x use only?
