Each U-boat costed 4 million RM, enough money to raise an infantry brigade. Each torpedo 25, 000 RM, the price of a house.

If the Eastern Front was said to be fought with blood, then the Western Front was fought with money. While casualties were nowhere near Eastern Front levels, fighting the Western allies was a huge drain on Germany's resources in expensive equipment and technology. Some estimated even with 3 millions boots on the ground in Russia, they only consume half as much resources as the navy and air force defending the Western Front against Britain.
