A German submarine patrols the Atlantic Ocean during World War II, manned by a crew that must contend with tense conflicts and long stretches of confined boredom. While war correspondent Werner (Herbert Grönemeyer) observes day-to-day life aboard the U-boat, the grizzled captain (Jürgen Prochnow) struggles to maintain his own motivation as he attempts to keep the ship's morale up in the face of fierce battles, intense storms and dwindling supplies.

He was about 2 seconds away from someone dropping on a dime on him to the Gestapo. He saved himself with that Churchill joke.

Thomsen's one of my favourite characters in this movie. He's drunk because he knows the score. Him and his friend and fellow U-boat Captain, the only two of "the old gang" still left.

According to Wolfgang Petersen, Otto Sander was actually plastered while filming this scene.

Fun fact, the real character of Lieutenant Thomsen was in his early 30's. The captain of the submarine portrayed in the movie in his late 20's. Yet both of them appear like old men, used up completely. These people were done after 5 years of service...

In the German military it’s called „bunter Abend“(colorful evening“) and I think that’s beautiful.

I just watched this film a week ago. I just wanna say wow. It made me feel the struggle to survive just to live another day and the importance of camaraderie in times of challenges. This film changed me in a personal level and left me speechless after finishing it

He looked like he was about to say something bad about Hitler, then changed his mind.

One of my favorite scenes from this absolute masterpiece. You have Thomsen, who is actually drunk in this scene, dangerously close to being a little too candid about how the old guard felt about Hitler (a viewpoint shared all the way up to Donitz). You have some very subtle facial expressions from the different classes of officers in the crowd who have wildly different opinions. And you have that overall feeling of existential-dread leading to all-out-debauchery that must have existed in real life in similar scenes.

Just wonderfully intricate and well told.

I like how he goes to kiss the lady, she reciprocates and he walks away, boy is drunk as a skunk, ha ha ha, one of my all time favorite movies, i truly enjoyed the new series too, its a must watch, i love everything to do with WW2 subs and have been in a few of them, if you've never have been to the Museum in Chicago to tour the Uboat you owe it to yourself, it is tops.

the character of Thomsen was heavily stylized and represents less of the actual captain and more of a general critique of the exhaustion and despair felt by many German soldiers as the war progressed.

Wolfgang Petersen said this was the second actor cast to play Thomsen, due to the first being too drunk too much.

They all party so extreme because they all knew, chances that they going to die are big. As stated at the begining only 1 of 4 survived the war.
