Imagine this in a pseudosequel to Minecraft Dungeons, or a DnD campaign.

You adventure with a girl named Jean, get to the End, and... there's no dragon. You puzzle over it for a while... and then Jean, who has been especially protective of a necklace, begins to giggle, escalating to a cackle, and takes the necklace off. In a matter of seconds, the petite ranger shifts into an enormous dragon, saying she wishes to "test your mettle, " and the fight begins.
