Why are the aircraft windows round or Oval instead of Square like normal windows? Well, in todays episode you will learn all about that and much more.
If you have other, aviation related, questions that you would like to talk to me about, make sure you download my app: Mentour aviation.
You can watch relevant Youtube videos, chat with other users or get a training collection where I will personally show you everything about Engine Failures, TCAS, Full setup of the Boeing 737 and much much more!
( I recommend the "Complete collection", 2 hours of instruction for 10$)

The history of fracture mechanics is fascinating.

Thank you again for your great video. The Comet was an amazing 1st jet aircraft were it not for the windows. Boeing 707 won out. Loved 707 except the cold floors in the aft. 😉 I would enjoy flying in the EU with you as my Captain. You are amazing and I hope you have a wonderful day.

I like how you overlayed the square window over top of your - - wait for it - - > [SQUARE WINDOW]

Before you answer this question my educated guess would be less surface area for the differential pressure pushing from inside of the airplane out towards the near vacuum outside

30 seconds in.
I remember (from other documentaries) stress fractures. Corners concerntrate stress, and pressurised hulls flex on ascent/descent. With time a crack forms and grows.
This killed the comet while Britain had a 5 to 7 years lead ahead of the Americans at the birth of jetliners.

BOAC flight 781 is such a sad story, and ultimately let Boeing dominate the market that DeHaviland had pioneered, but its aftermath also gave birth to much of the process of investigating air crashes that's still in use today, most notably reconstructing the wreckage on a frame to work out the failure sequence and doing simulations to determine if the conclusions of the investigation were correct (though in this case the simulation was done by physically pressurising a Comet airframe to breaking point, whereas today a computer simulation of stress loading would be done instead). It made flying safer for everyone

Well, in my limited experience it seems passengers are less and less concerned about looking outside, so bigger windows may not be an objective any more. With the personal electronic devices and in-flight entertainments systems, and greater need to take sleep any chance available, people are keeping the shades down anyway. Every flight I've been on this year was mostly shades down for most of the flight time.

A completely different question regarding Airbus's. Imagine you are a right handed captain, but the Sidestick is to your left or you are a left handed first officer, but the Sidestick is to your right. what do you do, especially when you have to fly manually. Looking forward for the answer(s).thank you

Something I often ask myself is - " what if DeHavilland got it right the first time " What if the Comet was a success ? Where would Boeing be today ? Where would Airbus be today ?

If we can imagine an empty soda can with small square holes on both sides vs. small round holes, approximating the fuselage of a plane... intuitively one might see how the can with the square holes would be less structurally sound.

I dont think widnows needed in todays plane because we can use camera to project inside.that can easily reduce the risk and fortify the body structure.

So why the 737 have a mix of oval and square windows ?

Hey petter, great video as usual. I had a question on bleed air. How does the air that enters the aircraft is like normal temprature, when the air inside the engine is extremely hot?

So do the cockpit windows suffer from extra fatigue? Becase they are not oval

How come cockpit windows aren't round? They often have very hard corners.
