There is a way you can change text color and background color in Notion. I do it all the time.

Set the background color first, then highlight the text you want to color and a little menu will pop up, click on the color option and select the color you want. Now you have a colored background with colored text.

yea i realised that too... few days back.. i was using notion... one moment it was the old one.. then i wanted to change the font colour again, and poof!! out of no where the highlight panel is different. i was like da heck?! did notion just mutated within seconds HAHAHAHAHA

I also like the aesthetics. It's nice to see updates from time to time for sure. Interesting that Notion doesn't just sent out a X (tweet still?) or something to keep us up to date.
