The ocean, a vast and unpredictable force, can unleash towering waves that dwarf even the mightiest ships. But amidst this watery chaos, the US Navy's aircraft carriers seemingly defy gravity, riding out the storm. 1976 on board the USS New Orleans LPH-11 in the South China Sea. I was with 3rd Batt. 4th Marines. The Capt. of the ship announced that he was trying to avoid the typhoon but was unable to. All Marines were told to “lay below in their berthing space” but that did not keep me and a couple of buddies from going topside to see natures fury. My buddies and I were on the bridge level of the island and we witnessed a wave that broke over the bow that must have been 15-20 feet higher than the bow. WHAT A SHOW!!! I was yelling so loud that the Capt. heard us and ordered us below or else. We obeyed the order but what a memory. Thanks to the U.S. Navy for the opportunity to witness mother nature’s fury.

The amount of immense technical innovation that went into this is astonishing. It's hard to even believe we are capable of understanding and utilizing so much about physics.

Ex Navy Sailor here from yesteryear, All navy ships use Ballast tanks to maintain the correct center of gravity and bouyancy no matter what is happening with shifting loads, they fill and empty tanks all day long during evolutions, most of this ballasting is automatically controlled.

It doesn't matter how high the wave is as long as the water remains outside of the ship!

My late neighbor and friend was on the U.S.S. Enterprise (non-wartime) in the parts warehouse (quartermaster). He said the ship would literally turn on it's side and they walked up the walls. Men fell from some of the high placed bunks, even when belted in and got hurt really badly. They were going through a hurricane when these things happened. He said it was a most awesome thing for a ship that size to be "sideways" on the ocean.

I know for a fact Supper Carriers can handle a typhon. USS Abraham Lincoln West Pac 93 we punched our way through one on the way to the Persian Gulf.

What are the sailors on board doing while the ship is bouncing up and down so violently?

I Was on the USS America CVA-66 in 1972 when we hit a Typhoon in the Gulf of Tonka, we had waves breaking over the bow. When you hit one of those waves the ship just shudders. Kind of scary. You could hear the screws coming out of the water.

“Unopposed under crimson skies. Immortalized over time, their legend will rise!
And their foes can’t believe their eyes. Believe their size, as they fall!
And the Dreadnoughts dread NOTHING AT ALL!”

US Navy ships 🚢 are built better than they were 100 years ago with better technology to keep them from sinking as easy, however the unsinkable ship is still a myth♡♡ Given the right conditions any ship will sink♡

A ship's bow is pronounced bau and rhymes with ow. Robin Hood uses a bow pronounced boe which rhymes with toe.

Head's up, the stock photo used at 3:11 is not a "U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier."
