I feel like this is 1 broken insert away from becoming a spitfire propeller

I'm actually very impressed with how good that sounded, I was expecting it to have a lot more chatter.

If you blacken it afterwards, you'll have a faux carbon fibre finish

Wow! The deflection looks very uniform all the way down!! That's impressive!!

Would be interesting to see how it would perform plunge milling instead of regular high feed, i had great result plunging high feed mills in the past, when i had less radial than axial material to remove.

Now that's some stone cold sturdy spindle to contain a high-speed shell mill with that BBC extension..

I had to do the same but in I used a 1.5" 6 insert dofeed. 14.5" stick out. I'd did not like it. But got her done. .01 step-down @ 125 SFM.

Surely plunge milling would be better/faster?

The presence of defects in the cutting process, high roughness, and a change in the dimensions of the work piece, especially at the bottom

Wow it mills and nurel's at the same time!

"Long protrusion"
Hahahahaha

I'm sorry I couldn't help myself.

I wonder if it would be stiffer if you make the cutters mounting diameter smaller and the extension conical for about 3-6°

Long overhang, It doesn't matter because the cutting forces are axial and not lateral to cause deflection on the toolholder.
Meaning that the cutting force is going thru the the spindle.

I wonder how much deflection is happening with that long of a bar

Good Ole chatter. Exactly what I expected.

I did the same thing in a mold shop in Ohio. Except I plunged milled the part in Z axis’s and did step overs 3/4 the width of the inserts. I save the company time and money. We machined the part in 3rd the time of conventional milling it.

Ok but how are you doing the finish pass?

Let's see what the finish cut would look like?
