Please remember that not all people they deemed “dangerous” were actually dangerous and a lot of abuse went on in rooms and places like these and still does

The padded rooms aren't for "dangerous" patients, it's made for patients that are either very loud or dangers to themselves, not others.

A little lesson from someone who actually was in a psych ward... four times. The padded room isn't actually for the most "dangerous" patients, but is a room that you are placed in if you are being very loud. Like screaming loud. You're usually placed there so that the other patients don't get scared, as the padded walls and floors act as a sound barrier. Also, it helps for when you slam your head against the wall over and over again. I can see why it would be different in an old one, but there usually wouldn't be a window in one of these, as they don't put anything in there that you could use to hurt yourself or others. It is very frightening to be in there, but it is honestly for the best, as lots of people, including myself, get very scared when someone is yelling.

Edit: I've gotten so many replies to this comment and thank you everyone so much for sharing your experiences. I know some for some of us the hospital has been a good things, and for some of us it has very much not. It is always good to educate yourself on these matters, and remember that when you don't know something, ask questions! <3

Reminder that just because someone is in an abandoned location doesn't meant they know jack shit on what they're talking about. Like the "padded" room that wasn't padded and had a standard mirror to see the entire room from the door. A safety procaution in patients rooms to make monitoring them easier

I was a mental health nursing student last year, my first ever placement I had, was at a psychiatric hospital in a secure forensic ward. The first 15 minutes I was there, a nurse got launched into the dining table and got a back injury and the other nurse with her got her eyebrow and eyelid split open by a cup that was thrown at her by one of the patients. On my 4th day, I seen a patient kick through a secure door, and they’re really heavy duty doors, and punch a hole through the wall despite being given a sedative. On my second to last day, I had someone threaten to behead me with a razor blade and try to give me paper cuts on the back of my neck. Mental health is no joke and you really do have to be careful. But not every person who is mentally unwell is dangerous, the majority aren’t and 9 times out of 10, they’re some of the loveliest people you can meet. But don’t let your guard down because that’s when things can go wrong, and when they do, it happens unbelievably quick 😂

I was in a few troubled teen residential programs in high school, my first had an isolation room like this, they could lock you in for hours. There was only a small window at the top of the door and the staff could cover it from the outside so you had NOTHING to view other than the white around you. It was torture. There was one in each unit, but my unit had an extra one in the basement and many girls got abused there. Horrrrible practice.

“This asylum, is built to help you! And don’t mind the screaming that’s just Cindy in C3, she does that sometimes, but while we work to find her a prescription, we will continue to help her, as we will continue to help you. ”

This is so sad. To think if I was born in that time I might have been trapped there instead of helped.

Idk about old ones but as someone who’s been to a psych ward, the one I went to had the padded rooms for if your being loud, violent or just need absolute solitude. They’d set a timer for like ten- 30 minutes and just leave you be. Never used it but it’s not always for the ‘most dangerous patient’. Remember psych patients are still people!

So let's add accuracy. This looks like it's in a main hall, which means it is an isolation chamber probably meant for serious and sudden outbursts. Before then 1980's, there wasn't really a "padded room" and patients were often just strapped down. The padded rooms were never for the most dangerous patients. They were, and still are, used to keep patients from injuring themselves more than other people. If someone was going into the room they might be placed in a straight jacket, or not, most psych hospitals keep patients in a pair of simple shorts and really, really thin t-shirt, no shoes and maybe small, below the ankle socks (Psych patients can't wear robes and slippers, it's a safety risk, a person can hurt themselves in a lot of ways). The room wasn't going to cure anyone, but if they were violent and active enough to resist, it would give the patient a chance to let all that anger and energy out, and after a couple hours a psychiatric patient who has been mentally and physically exhausted can be reasoned with. These rooms were never for long term housing or seriously dangerous patients, they are stop gaps for someone who's throwing a fit. And when the fit is over, the doctors and nurses are supposed to work with the patient to keep it from happening again. Sadly, it was and still is more about containment than cures, it's still used, and so are straight jackets. The rooms meant for dangerous patients, ones that have intent to harm others and themselves, they are not kept in public areas like this and would be in a private ward with special rooms built for more than a 3 hour stay. Safety residence don't have padding, it just gets ripped down and used for other things. So, no, this wasn't to keep the patient from hurting others. A dangerous patient might be sedated, would be physically restrained, probably in the hug chair or a strap bed.

Fun fact these still exist! They’re just called “quiet rooms” now. Used the shower in one when I was at the ward, best shower I’ve ever had there that’s for sure.

It is not only for "dangerous people" I've been in there too, like a and tbf the personal was more dangerous than me fr.
You don't wanna know what they did there.
Like they literally tied me and others TO THE BED so we couldn't "resist" and that was seriously the most traumatic time of my life.
I wasn't hurting anyone, I wasn't aggressive but "I got on their nerves with my problems" so they found it necessary to do so.

They would put me in there for DAYS and didn't let me out.
So naturally you're gonna start feeling like you're goin literally crazy.

That place gave me so much ptsd and now I have way more problems than I had to begin with

Padded rooms are not for “dangerous” patients but patients who are a danger to themselves. Many times it is a short stay while they accumulate to new medications

The interesting thing is that the walls were made of something that clearly held up over the years unlike the other walls
