How To Adjust Your Car Mirrors-Driving Lesson

In this video, I show you how to adjust your car mirrors. It is a driving lesson for beginners and goes over one of the most basic driving skills. It is important to adjust your mirrors properly before you begin driving because you will rely on them to safely make lane changes and see beside and behind your car (along with checking your blind spots and turning your head around). With that being said, it is crucial that you take the appropriate steps to adjust your mirrors before you put your car in drive or reverse.

The way I was taught. Put your head against your driver window, and just see the side of the car. Put your head over your center console, and just see the right side of your car. This allows your mirrors to show you the vehicles off your rear corners, which are the ones you are going to hit/cut-off if you change lanes, minimizing blind spots. And always turn around to double check.

I hear you shouldnt see the car at the driving position because of the bigger blind spot. And that you should only see it if you put your head a few inches on either side to see the sides car

Who ever said that this person's way of adjusting mirtors was incorrect needed to learn again. You need to see a little bit of your car and not too much of the sky. To completely eliminate blind spot, you have to do head check otherwise install a convex mirror like trucks or buses. How can you park if you can not see the sides of your car?

I think the ideal mirror setup is a little bit different. The side mirror, rear view mirror and your peripheral vision (9 and 3 o clock) should construct a continuous panaromic view of the back and two lanes next to your car.

You setup your comfortable driving seat position first, then setup your rear view mirror. Then look in the rear view mirror's left and right side for land marks on the left and right. Then you adjust the side mirrors so that they start to show the view of left and right lanes where the left and right side of the rear mirror's view ends.

The ideal setup should give you a continious panaromic view of the back and left right of your car. You don't need to see portions of your car for reference. Over time you will be able to judge by the side mirrors how far is the car next to you.

This video is wrong, you’re supposed to adjust your mirror until you dont see your car anymore. This is accoring to the SAE(Society of Automobile Engineers) paper published on mirror geometry and blind spot removal.

I disagree of this setting regarding side mirror. There is not much time to warn you on moving car getting near you because of little side view. Better is to adjust the side mirror moving it out until such time that you longer see the side of your car but still can see it by tilting your head a lil bit. This way, you can have a larger view from your side and have an ample time to avoid collision from a car moving toward you. You'll never knew, the car behind you may lost control.
