How To Adjust Your Car Mirrors To Eliminate Blind Spots SAE

Adjusting their vehicle's mirrors is something all drivers do as a normal routine. But according to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and Car and Driver Magazine, it's also something that most of us are probably doing wrong! I read an article published in Car and Driver about a paper written by the SAE, in which the SAE laid out the best way to adjust your mirrors in order to eliminate dangerous blind spots. It opened my eyes and made me change how I was doing it, so I wanted to share that with you. I've also included a link below to the original article where this information came from and I recommend that you read it for yourself. Thanks for watching!

My brother was an over the road truck driver. He explained it to me that "If you can see YOUR CAR in your mirrors, then you DON'T have them set right."

I can also vouch for this. Been using this mirror setup for about a year or two and my confidence has sky rocketed. It allows you to have a 360/panoramic view of the cars behind you which is excellent for putting you at ease when changing lanes and being aware of the cars around you. What used to be a scary maneuver became a piece of cake for me due to this mirror setup.

I'm using this mirror-settings for 38 years now. Works perfect!
Important on highways: Always look into the inside mirror FIRST to see, if a fast car is approaching. Then check left mirror, before you change lanes.

This video is the single most thing that changed the way I drive. I've been using it for over 3 years now and have NEVER missed a car or bike in my blindspot!

Thanks for the amazing video, just thought to drop back and let you know!

Now this should have at least 10 million views. This should be officially recommended by YouTube, instead of click baits! Thank you.

It does take a little getting used to (like Stan said) but once you do its FANTASTIC. The demonstration was 100 percent accurate, the front of the vehicle shows up in your side mirrors before completely leaving your rearview.

I tried this yesterday . . . . very weird, but it took me only a day to get used to it. As one person said, it gives you confidence on the road. I use blind spot mirrors to see my side inside when backing up. Since we drive forward most of the time it makes sense to me to set the side mirrors properly as demonstrated in this video by Stan, and use those small blind spot mirrors for backing up. Thank you, Stan.

The way he describes the adjustments is exactly what I have been doing for the whole of my driving life and it works perfectly

Found this video a few years back when doing some safety training for my last job. Never did stop in to comment. Thanks, this video has been a game changer. I use it now in every vehicle I drive and have let others in my family know about it. Definitely a big improvement.

Hello Stan, thanks for the video. 55 years of driving with my mirrors adjusted incorrectly. Used your suggested methods, no blind spot, I see cars from the rear view mirror to the side mirror. Thank you.
Someone needs to put a public announcement, seriously.

I'm under 21 and I have a full license, but it's been a while since I've driven (what with COVID and all). So, I was checking YouTube and online resources to refresh the proper procedures/safety precautions to drive, and I came across this video. I decided to try it out, and I feel much more comfortable as a (relatively) new driver, especially on the freeway! Thank you for the crystal clear explanation!

I’ve been using this technique since 2005 when Mazda gave me a defensive driving course as a gift for buying a new Mazda 6. Best bit of driving advice I ever got. It’s a game changer. It takes a few days to get used to it but it really works.

Thanks Stan, this just proves that you can teach an old dog new tricks. I have been driving 40 years and (thanks to you) have learned how to avoid the blind spots. Not only I have changed my 2 cars but also passed the message on to my friends.

Thank you for the video.

I had read about this some 20 years ago and had been using this method. I was only about 2 yrs with my driver's license so it was easier to switch. This method makes a big difference. I vouch for it. That article also said twisting your head to check over the shoulder could lead to you driving towards that direction and crash on to a car that is in the blind spot with the "classical way" of adjusting the mirror. So adopt this method and try avoid looking over the shoulder.

I've been using this for years and it literally saved life. With a setup before this, I thought I was clear change lane then out of nowhere a someone speeds up. With this setup, if I see someone recklessly speeding up on the side, they're visible to me. Thank you so much for teaching us this setup

Years ago I saw this video and have been using this technique ever since. It really is the only way to set your mirrors properly in my opinion and I have forwarded this video to many people. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten into someone else's car and they had more of their own car in sight in their mirrors than anything else around them. (I feel like shouting, "DUDE!!!! You already know your OWN CAR is there!!! No need to have your car in your mirror!" ) Anyway, thank you for this awesome video!!
