It all comes down to Practice, Practice, Practice, the more one can be in the water the more in tune the skills are going to be .

I just got my own BCD and there are pockets in back for weights. What is the back to front weight ratio?

Very good advices and I would have put the weight check in Number One personally because when you have the improper weight, it can cause anxiety and you breathe more rapidly in that case thus consuming more air (talking with experience hehe I was diving a shipwreck at night at 100ft deep and I had too much weight... I wasted so much air on that dive I was so anxious...)

Question? If a person has a generally low resting heart rate and finds being in the water very calming, I assume this might reduce air consumption?

The best way to use less air is by diving more and having a regular fitness routine.
